Stay to sleeping in the fields of clover
Four leaf clover just for you
I went upstairs to take a bath
I found my letters drowning you got in
The tub with me the water closed around us
And all the ink had turned the water black
I swam all night across the ocean
Holding tight to the potion
The love potion meant for you
We're mad at the sea at dawn
The sun came up the stars went down
You drank my love all gone
We stood there singing the same song
I can hear the distant ringing
Of the mermaids softly singing
Always singing just for you
Always singing just for you
The lyrics to Sometymes Why's song "Clover" depict a bittersweet and dreamlike narrative of love and loss. The chorus sets an intimate and soothing tone, reassuring someone to hush and find solace in the impending end. The image of sleeping in fields of clover represents finding peace and tranquility in the midst of a difficult situation.
The first verse paints a vivid picture of a bathtub scene where the singer discovers letters drowning with them. This metaphorical drowning can be seen as the weight of past communication and unresolved emotions that have come to the surface. The water turning black signifies the darkness and heaviness of their shared history. The question of when the singer will return implies an unfulfilled longing for their presence.
The second verse transitions to a symbol of longing and determination. The singer sets out on a journey, swimming all night across the ocean, holding onto a love potion meant for their beloved. This potion represents their desire to keep the love alive and find a way to mend the brokenness between them. The phrase "holding tight to the potion" suggests a sense of determination and hope despite the challenging circumstances.
In the bridge, there is a shift towards a more surreal and mythical atmosphere. The sea becomes a source of frustration and anger, personified as being "mad" at dawn. The sun rising and the stars fading symbolize the passage of time and the fading of their love. The line "You drank my love all gone" implies a sense of betrayal or depletion of emotions. However, despite these hardships, they find solace in standing together and singing the same song, which possibly signifies a shared connection and understanding amidst their struggles.
Overall, "Clover" portrays a complex and emotionally charged relationship. It explores themes of longing, loss, and the search for solace in the face of adversity. The lyrics evoke a dreamlike and introspective atmosphere, leaving room for interpretation and personal reflection.
