Somos are as no-frills and trend-averse as it gets. The Boston band works in catchy, passionate three-minute rock songs recorded with too much punch to be lo-fi, too melodically contoured to be punk. So even with its blunt-force drum rolls and jagged chording, "Dead Wrong" sneaks up on you: on one end, it packs so many short, sharp hooks, the chorus can fly right by you on the first listen. They strike a weirdly rare balance in the process, situating themselves between blue-collar indie rock and a white-collar life.
Michael Fiorentino sets the dramatic stakes ("Empire and a crown of thorns/Today you get two for one") and reveals the all-too-familiar source of that despair: tucking in your shirt, staring at a computer, "Shaking hands til your arms fell off". "Somos" translates roughly to "We are", and on "Dead Wrong" they wisely commiserate with the workforce drowning rather than casting judgment, gifting a car song for people who aren't so much working for the weekend as they are working until the inevitable bitter end.

Streets Upon Streets
Somos Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
About some touch or a glance
Finally we have the change to count the scars
Before this goes too far keep in mind
It′s a fine line, a fine line
I'm sure you had a fine time, cuz there′s a fine line
Between adoration and dispossession
A lotta waiting around, a lotta paper work
A lotta staring at the ground, yeah, my head's down
And again, and all again, I feel it all, I can't recall
Out there it′s just burned out copy everywhere I look
And a moment of this or that can′t erase the years of sorrow
And a moment of this or that can't erase the years of sorrow
(I′m just passing through, so are you... so are you)
I heard that it's too late(?!), almost picked up my things
One thing from the year with her
I saw the light of day and the heart of the way
I was brought to assume that
I feel it happen and I can′t call it
Happen, I'm just passing through, so are you!
The song "Streets Upon Streets" by Somos is an introspective reflection on the challenges of human connection in a fast-paced, ever-changing world. The opening line speaks to the vastness of opportunity in modern society, endless streets and opportunities to meet new people, but in reality, many of these interactions only amount to fleeting touches or glances. The lyrics then express gratitude for the chance to count one's scars, to reflect on past experiences and gain knowledge from them before moving forward.
The chorus emphasizes the fine line between admiration and dispossession, how easy it can be to cross the boundaries of healthy admiration into possessiveness and obsession. The subsequent verses depict a sense of stagnation and apathy, waiting around and staring at the ground, feeling lost and disconnected despite the constant stimulation of city life. The repeated phrase "I'm just passing through, so are you" speaks to the impermanence of our existence, the inevitability of our fleeting time on this earth and the importance of cherishing the connections we do make.
Overall, "Streets Upon Streets" is a poignant and honest look at the struggle to connect with others in a world that often feels overwhelming and disconnected. It encourages us to take the time to reflect on our past experiences and strive for healthy, meaningful connections with those around us.
Line by Line Meaning
Streets Upon Streets and endless opportunities to meet
There are many streets and places to meet people in the world.
About some touch or a glance
A small touch or look can mean a lot.
Finally we have the chance to count the scars
We finally have the chance to reflect and acknowledge our past pains.
Before this goes too far keep in mind
Let's remember to stay grounded and not get carried away.
It's a fine line, a fine line
There's a very thin line between love and obsession.
I'm sure you had a fine time, cuz there's a fine line
You may have enjoyed yourself, but be careful not to cross that thin line.
Between adoration and dispossession
The line between love and obsession can lead to unhealthy attachment and possessiveness.
A lotta waiting around, a lotta paper work
There's a lot of tedious work that goes into life.
A lotta staring at the ground, yeah, my head's down
Sometimes it feels like we're just going through the motions.
And again, and all again, I feel it all, I can't recall
We may feel stuck in a cycle and it's hard to remember what came before.
Out there it's just burned out copy everywhere I look
The world seems repetitive and uninspiring.
And a moment of this or that can't erase the years of sorrow
A single moment cannot undo the pain and hurt of many years.
(I'm just passing through, so are you... so are you)
We are all just temporary visitors in this world.
I heard that it's too late(?!), almost picked up my things
There may be moments of regret or missed opportunity.
One thing from the year with her
There may be one memory or object that reminds us of a past love.
I saw the light of day and the heart of the way
We may have moments of clarity and understanding.
I was brought to assume that
We may have been taught certain things that are not necessarily true.
I feel it happen and I can't call it
We may feel things intensely but not be able to explain or understand them.
Happen, I'm just passing through, so are you!
Things happen in life and we are just temporary observers of them.

Attempt at the lyrics as the only version I've found seems subpar:
Streets upon streets
And endless opportunities to meet
A passing touch or a glance
Finally we have the chance to compare scars
Before this goes too far keep in mind
It's a fine line, a fine line
I'm sure you'd have a fine time, but there's a fine line
between adoration and dispossession
A lot of waiting around, a lot of paperwork
A lot of staring at the ground, yeah my head's down
And again, and again
I feel it all, but I can't recall where I've been
It's just a burnt-out copy everywhere I look
It's a fine line, a fine line
I'm sure you'd have a fine time, but there's a fine line
Between adoration and dispossession
And a moment of this or that can't erase the years of sorrow
And a moment of this or that can't erase the years of sorrow
I'm just passing through
And so are you
I heard bad news today
Unspeakable things unfit for the ear were said
I saw the light of day in a horrible way
I was wrong to assume we could stay ever-lucky
And again, and again
I feel it all, but I can't recall where I've been
I'm just passing through
So are you
It's a fine line, a fine line
I'm sure you'd have a fine time, but there's a fine line
Between adoration and dispossession
