Split Lips
Sons and Daughters Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Talking back on a cold-crying shoulder
Get in a car with the taxi driver
Sympathy of strangers, hoping to find her
Oh oh oh oh-oh-oh
Collisions came as consequence
Mixed-up words, find out what she meant
Witness the scene after the accident
Passersby, nothing to see here at all
Fast-forward talking yourself into the wall
You never asked for an audience
So why'd you care 'bout the reviews you're gonna get?
Mixed-up words, find out what she meant
Witness the scene after the accident
Collisions came as consequence
Watching the scene after the accident
Oh oh oh oh-oh-oh
Mixed-up words, find out what she meant
Witness the scene after the accident
Oh oh oh oh-oh-oh
Collisions came as consequence
Watching the scene after the accident
Oh oh oh oh-oh-oh
Mixed-up words, find out what she meant
Watching the scene after the accident
The lyrics of Sons and Daughters' "Split Lips" seem to be discussing emotional turmoil and the coping mechanisms people use to get through it. The first verse describes someone who is hurting themselves by constantly talking back to their own negative thoughts and feelings. They seek the company of strangers, hoping to find some solace in their sympathy. The chorus uses the metaphor of a car accident to describe the chaotic emotions that can arise in difficult situations. The collisions referred to are the emotional crashes that can result from intense feelings. The line "mixed-up words, find out what she meant" suggests confusion and a struggle to communicate feelings.
The second verse appears to be directed towards someone who is avoiding confrontation and keeping their feelings to themselves. They are described as fast-forwarding their own thoughts until they hit a metaphorical wall, unable to move forward. The lines "you never asked for an audience/so why'd you care 'bout the reviews you're gonna get?" suggest a reluctance to share one's feelings with others, perhaps out of fear of judgement. The bridge repeats the lines from the chorus and emphasizes the confusion and chaos of emotional turmoil.
Overall, the song seems to be an exploration of the ways people handle their emotions and the struggles they face in doing so. The car accident metaphor is used to convey the unpredictability and intensity of emotions, as well as the potential for serious consequences if they are not properly managed.
