Whatever
Sophia Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I return to these streets after years away
Much is the same but so much has changed
Voices and smells float from far away lands
They're praying to God in ways I don't understand

An icy wind floats from the north to the south
Words that build walls, fall from it's mouth
But a voice that is greater with no need to scream
Says whatever you believe you've a place next to me

When we sing together, we are free forever
Whatever you believe, come and sing with me
When we sing together, we are free forever
Whatever you believe, come and sing with me

Whatever you believe you've got a friend in me
From the music you like or the shoes on your feet
See, we're all tryin' to make ends meet
See I mean all over the world from North to the South from the West to the East
Longitude or latitude I'm coming with this attitude
I got my life and I'm filled with gratitude, absolute love and that is an attribute
So let's sing together, just take my hand as we tread through the weather and hate could never ever sever that tether
I write this letter in the hope that we as a human race get better
So whatever you believe you'll always find a friend in me, you'll always find a friend in me

When we sing together, we are free forever
Whatever you believe, come and sing with me
When we sing together, we are free forever
Whatever you believe, come and sing with me
(I do believe I change

I do believe we're all the same
I do believe in miracles today)

Overall Meaning

The singer returns to their familiar streets after a long absence and notices both similarities and changes. They observe people from different backgrounds praying in ways they don't understand, highlighting the diversity of beliefs and cultures. Meanwhile, an icy wind carries divisive words that build walls.

Amidst this, a voice emerges, one that doesn't need to scream to be heard. It tells the listener that regardless of what they believe, they have a place next to it. The power of coming together and singing is emphasized as a means of freedom and connection. The chorus repeats the message that regardless of beliefs, all are welcome to join in singing and find friendship.

The bridge continues the theme of inclusivity, expressing that everyone, regardless of their preferences in music or material possessions, is just trying to make ends meet. The song encourages unity and a positive outlook on life, stating that love and gratitude are essential attributes. The hope is expressed that as a human race, we can improve and become better.

Overall, "Whatever" promotes the idea that no matter what one believes or where they come from, they can find friendship and acceptance through unity and shared experiences, especially through the act of singing together.

I feel bad for her. She just doesn't know, but wants to fit in. It's sad.

Cody Bjork-Andison

Yeah it's not fair to push people too stupid to understand their own ideologies that they want to identify with.

milan-hoi

She's trying to surf public oppinion, but when she has to share her own oppinion, you notice she's empty inside. She guesses what other might agree with, and when she realises there's pushback, she backtracks. She thinks she said the wrong thing.

Why not just read a few books or articles and educate yourself? We're not talking integral calculus here. These are some simple reading points that a 7th grade student could elaborate. Why would I say a movie is bad when I've never seen it?

She is a classic case of believing some thing solely on the fact that others believe it without actually thinking it for herself!

エリックEric

She is the perfect example of believing something because someone/some organization I like said so.

Chris

She’s the classic example of most humans at that age.
Most that didn’t agree with her also weren’t able to articulate their reasons why.

itsbarbaric

@Chris because she said nothing. she was talking, but said nothing.

Chris

@itsbarbaric Naw, the other girl that was talking to her the most is the one that brought up the pay gap. Then said the pay gap doesn’t exist. Then also said that the girl should look at the men to see what they are doing to work harder so she can close the gap. (The one she just said didn’t exist)

Also the “pay gap” does exist, it should be called “income gap”. It’s just not bc of sexism. It’s from choice differences.

She's absolutely not a radical feminist. She doesn't even know what the hell that is. By definition, a 'radical' anything is vehement about their position and will staunchly defend it. She doesn't even know which foot she stands on.
