Their music can be characterized by elegantly composed rhythms, floating sound of typical folk-instruments like bagpipes, flutes and violins, in an electronica-composition that supports the dramatic lyrics. Some tracks on Mark II are up-beat with only few lyrics and could also be characterized as dance or techno.
The lyrics are old stories from Danish folk tradition, about jealousy, murder and creatures. In Kirstin from Mark II a father serves a meal of his daughter's boyfriend's heart for her. In Ulver from Mark III a man takes his girlfriend into the forest to kill her and bury her without her knowledge. He falls asleep and she cuts him in pieces with his own sword.
Sorten Muld has also published a concept album called Jord, Luft, Ild, Vand (Earth, Air, Fire, Water) – a mostly instrumental journey through the classic elements. The album is a remastered recording from a live show at Bornholm.

Bonden Og Elverpigen
Sorten Muld Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The song tells the story of a farmer who lived south of a river and had everything he wished for, including four sons and two daughters. However, he had a persistent longing that he couldn't shake off. At the same time, there was a girl who lived in the strong current of the river, and her beauty was unforgettable. She sneaked into the farmer's dreams at night, and his longing intensified. One morning, the farmer saw the girl, but the current was too strong, and she slipped away. From that day on, the farmer's longing never ceased, and he never saw the girl again.
The lyrics are melancholic, and the story behind them is mysterious. It's about unfulfilled desires and longing for something that is unattainable. The girl from the river seems to represent a fleeting moment of beauty and happiness that the farmer could never hold on to. The repetition of the line "And I long out all my days" adds to the sadness of the story and creates a sense of endless yearning.

Hello Raveendra.
I am happy that you enjoy the music. Sorten Muld is a Danish folktronica band from the 90's, you can read more about them on Wikipedia if you would like.
Their songs were mostly modern interpretations of old Danish folk stories, including this one. It's about a happily married farmer who falls in love with an elven girl that lives in the river. Searching for her, he ends up drowning.
Here is a rough translation of the lyrics in English:
"A farmer lived south of our creek
everything he wanted, he could have
he has four sons and he has two daughters
- And I'm longing for all my days -
A girl lived in the powerful streams of the river
One will never forget a figure so beautiful
At night she sneaked into the farmers dream
- And I'm longing for all my days -
In the early morning, the farmer had to see her
But the current was too strong and his horse slipped
- And I'm longing for all my days -
A farmer lived south of our creek
everything he wanted, he could have
No one ever saw the farmer and the girl again
- And I'm longing for all my days -"
Best wishes to you! I'd love to see Sri Lanka one day.

A quick translation is something like this:
The farmer and the elven girl
There lived a farmer a bit south from our stream
Al that he wished to have, he could get
Of sons he had four, of daughters he had two
Chorus: And I'm longing out through all my days
There lived a girl in the brisk stream's waters
You never would forget such a beautiful figure
At night she snuck into the farmer's dreams
And I'm longing out through all my days
In the early morning, the farmer longed to see her
But the stream was to strong, and the horse slipped
And I'm longing out through all my days
There lived a farmer a bit south from our river
All that he wished for, he could get
No one saw the farmer or the elven girl again
And I'm longing out through all my days

I used to put this album on repeat on low volume when I went to bed in my college dorm room back in the days.
I think I bought this album 1992.
Still have somewhere.
This song was my absolute favourite of Sorte Muld.
Greetings from Sweden.

Why is this song the best song in the world? I don't even speak Danish!
@OdinsRealm
Man kan syntes meget, men Sorten muld er en klasse for sig. En af de beste i deres genre. Det folk i nutiden og de gør det smukt. Bonden og elverpigen er min favorit af alle deres sange.
@ahkkariq7406
Wow! Nydelig. Her dras du inn i musikken, blir forhekset. Som av nøkken.
@OdinsRealm
kærlighed dør aldrig. Nu mere tragisk det skal blive nu mere føles det meningsløst. Kærligheden - eller begæret, kan gøre livet skrøbeligt. Ikke desto mindre er det en smuk sang.
@1959Ragge
