Soul of Man are Justin Rushmore and Jem Panufnik, together responsible for setting up the world famous Finger Lickin’ Records. As producers they have created a barrage of funk driven records, and as performers are an international DJ success story.
Having set up Finger Lickin’ Records in the late nineties it wasn’t long until they had a string of breakbeat classics under their belt; ‘Love & Hate’, ‘Between the Eyes’ and ‘Gonna Keep On’, became a staple in every DJ’s box with a unique sound that attracted other like minded producers to join forces with the Finger Lickers. The Plump DJs, Krafty Kuts, A-Skillz, Lee Coombs and The Drumattic Twins soon became part of the collective as their sound helped shape a whole generation of music makers. It’s a little known secret that without Justin and Jem a whole chapter in the history of dance music would never have existed.
Just as at home behind the decks, Justin and Jem have toured the world DJing and their profile in Australia is legendary having performed ten times in six years! Throughout the summer season they will often be found face down in the fields of Glastonbury, The Big Chill or The Glade, as well as finding time for annual appearances in Ibiza.
Jem, also a graphic designer, is responsible for the distinctive artwork on all the Finger Lickin’ record sleeves. His musical passion has its roots deep in funk and he is a classically trained percussionist, while Justin has always been a DJ. Best known for his party-fuelled rocking DJ sets, Justin’s experience spans from the times of him grafting as a mobile jock back in the eighties, through to the hazy days of the acid house parties of the nineties. Soul of Man clearly wear their musical influences on their sleeves; from funk to early hardcore, with lashings of house, all rolled together in their driving percussive force that makes the backbone to their distinctive sound.
As remixers Soul of Man have attracted attention from a multitude of producers including Jacknife Lee, Doug Lazy, James Taylor Quartet, Fluke, Dub Pistols and Dreadzone all who wanted a taste of their special blend of breakbeat spice. It’s no surprise that Soul of Man’s productions have rarely left DJ’s boxes: 2001’s ‘Dirty Waltzer’, the dubwise-inspired ‘Killa Brew’, ‘The Drum’; ‘MyLowDownDirty’ or even their most recent single ‘SukDat’ have all become monster club smashes. However it actually all began for the boys back in 1998 with ‘Breakthru’ a mix compilation of post-Bigbeat, funk fuelled party tunes. It was this album that gave birth to the whole new sound. Since then they have been responsible for mixing all four volumes of the legendary ‘Finger Lickin’ Thang’ series, React’s ‘21st Century Breaks’ and the ‘Y4K’ mix for Distinc’tive.
This June Soul of Man release ‘Re-Licked’ - a celebration of ten years of music making. On this stunning double CD the early, groundbreaking classics rub shoulders with twelve spanking new remixes courtesy of the hottest producers in today’s scene. A-Skillz, Merka, TroubleSoup!!, Deepcut, Nick Thayer, Kraak & Smaak and others have created outstanding and diverse reinterpretations of their fave Soul of Man tracks.

Taking your (??).purple velvet trim
Give ya something to rock to
A taste of the sound you could lick off your lips
Dialate it, hesitate it, make it fornicate
Start the tremble from the drums, it'll make you shake
It's a new kinda dance tune
It's better than sex
BABY!
WHOA!
Bullets of sweat
Got me a taste
Leave it to me to create the best
A state of the art
I'll tear you apart
And hit you like a shot thru the heart
WHOA
YEAH
TAKE IT!
Yeahh.
For every second u hear this
The moment straggles your eyes and all bets begin to break
You can leave me a death wish
I'm dyin to move and it's killin' me, killin' me
Leave your thoughts, all your ties don't resistate him
He's a slave to the rave keep the fever goin
Like a heart of a toaster
I'm the bitch out to give you a ha-ha-ha-ha hard time
Yeah
Bullets of sweat
Got me a taste
Leave it to me to create the best
A state of the art
I'll tear you apart
And hit you like a shot thru the heart
Bullets of sweat
Like under your chest
Leave it to me to create the best
A state of the art
I'll tear you apart
And hit you like a shot thru the
YEAH!
WOO!
BABY!, oh thats good
Ha harder ha, harder ha, oh oh
Bullets of sweat
Got me a taste
Leave it to me to create the best
A state of the art
I'll tear you apart
And hit you like a shot thru the heart
What you say?
A shot thru the heart and you're to blame!
The lyrics to Soul of Man's song "Intro" are a wild and provocative call to action. The opening lines set the tone: "Hold on I'm ready to shock you / Taking your (??).purple velvet trim / Give ya something to rock to / A taste of the sound you could lick off your lips." Here, the singer appears to be promising an experience that is both sensual and dangerous. The use of the word "shock" suggests that the listener is in for something unexpected or even painful. Despite this warning, however, the singer is insistent: "It's a new kinda dance tune / It's better than sex / And it's coming for you."
The next few lines of the song reinforce this idea of irresistible pleasure: "Bullets of sweat / Got me a taste / Leave it to me to create the best / A state of the art / I'll tear you apart / And hit you like a shot thru the heart." The reference to "bullets of sweat" suggests intensity and violence, while the repeated promise to "tear you apart" implies a kind of sexual ferocity. The chorus, with its insistent "Whoa!" and "Yeah!" punctuating the lines, reinforces the sense of urgency and excitement.

I used to play this at gigs in the 70s and 80s. I see now I didn't play the verse part exactly right so thanks for the more accurate rendition since I plan to do a cover with my musician kids. Steve Cropper came up with some of the most clever, perfectly fitting comp parts ever.

I used to play this at gigs at university in the early 2000s and I did exactly the same! Learned it by ear and didn't realise that the verse riff started with the lower G chord, so used the higher inversion that it goes up to. Still sounded ok and nobody noticed (I hope...)

Actually - this is the best lesson for this song on youtube. For a start, the tone is pretty decent, you explain the harmonic structure, and you don't labour the fret numbers overly. So helpful when you are explaining it in terms of the intervals and triads. Thanks!
