Soulfly incorporates many styles of metal with Brazilian tribal and world music. All of their first six studio albums debuted on the United States Billboard 200, with a peak position at number 32 for their second album, Primitive. Soulfly has been certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America. The band has gone through numerous line-up changes, with Cavalera being the only constant member. In an interview with Max in 2015, it is revealed that the band's name was taken from the song "Headup" by Deftones, a song that Max collaborated on.

Zumbi e o senhor das demandas
Quando zumbi chega
E zumbi quem manda (crenca popular)

Your tribe, our tribe
Your god, our god
Your tribe, our tribe
Your tribe, my tribe
Hear the drums, they come from the sea
Bring the tribal spirit on me
Cause my pride and my roots I believe
No, this tribe you can't take it from me

The lyrics to Soulfly's song Tribe convey the idea of unity and pride in one's cultural and ethnic background. The chorus repeats the phrases "your tribe, our tribe" and "your god, our god", with Max Cavalera, Soulfly's lead singer, listing different tribes from around the world in the bridge of the song. The repetition of these phrases emphasizes the idea that despite differences in language or beliefs, all humans belong to a tribe or group that they can take pride in.
The beginning of the song mentions a popular belief that "Zumbi is the lord of wars" and "Zumbi is the lord of demands". Zumbi was a Brazilian slave who became the leader of a runaway slave community known as the Quilombo dos Palmares. He is a central figure in Afro-Brazilian history and his name has become synonymous with resistance and the fight for freedom. The reference to Zumbi in the song highlights the theme of pride, resistance, and fighting against oppression.
The verses of the song further emphasize the need for unity, with Cavalera singing about the importance of his tribe and how it cannot be taken away from him. The tribal drums in the background of the song add to the overall tribal feeling and make the listener feel like they are a part of the tribe.
Overall, "Tribe" is a song that celebrates cultural and ethnic diversity and encourages pride in one's roots. It highlights the similarities between different tribes and emphasizes the need for unity and resistance against oppression.
