Great analysis of one of my favorite recordings! Simon's part is just barely in my weak range as a mediocre singer but it's one of the most satisfying musical things I can perform if I'm with a decent singer. I'm surprised you said you get flack for mentioning relative modulations. They are, in my opinion, a critical element to modern music. I teach "Boys Of Summer" by Don Henley to my students to demonstrate relative modulations from minor to major for verses + choruses, but I consider the bridge to be a brief modulation into relative Lydian-would you agree?

It's not relative modulations specifically, I just always get flack whenever I consider something in anything but the most obvious key. Check the comments of, say, my Message In A Bottle video. (Although it's mostly nice and respectful, I was being a bit facetious for comedy.)

Wow, I always thought the song was musically simple and just lyrically brilliant. I always thought of Sound of Silence as a beautiful poem with a simple but haunting melody/accompaniment. Thanks for shedding some light on how the musical structure plays a role in the overall effect. I still do think that a big part of the song’s power comes from Paul Simon’s lyrics, but I guess that goes without saying.

Simon is a badass. About this being his best song, I honestly wouldn't know how to choose. There's a lot of gems even just in the early-ish albums I'm most familiar with- "Patterns", "Kathy's Song", "Duncan", "Flowers Never Bend With the Rainfall", "Old Friends" randomly spring to my mind but most pieces I can think of have such a definite character of their own that they're pretty unforgettable to me.

Completely agree. Simon is probably the best songwriter of the 20th century. There is so much to choose from, he does not repeat himself, every album offers new gems. For example when I first heard Cool Papa Bell, I was disappointed because it did not sound much like Simon at all. But that is the point. It is an excellent song and it shows that even after all these years he is not content with rehashing stuff that worked half a century ago. I have nothing but respect.

I am glad you mentioned the sound engineering on this song. I have hears this song a million times on radio and whatnot, but when I first heard this song with the two voices separated left and right, it seemed very different. When you hear it together on the radio it just sounds like two harmonies but when one is left and the other is right, you an odd separation. It is the only song that seems that different with such a simple difference in listening experience.

Love this song, loved your analysis. The Disturbed version adds another layer. One, it's a solo piece, and two, there is a rising sense of foreboding, or at least tention - getting very bombastic with the full orchestra, followed by a sudden quietly sung last phrase, and an orchestral sting.

I still like S&G best, but Disturbed's very is good for different reasons.

Thanks 12tone. We were taught this song in 3rd grade (around 8yrs old) at school by a very musical teacher who I hadn't thought about for a long time. It was a song from my Mum's album collection too and I have always related to the lyrics and stirring gentle harmonies of the vocals. I think S&G's most impressive song is "Scarborough Fair" in which Simon seamlessly blends a second melody in with the main verses of the song. The time signature is very odd in that one too.

I think I enjoy these videos despite not understanding most of it due to how different of a perspective it is. I've always been intuitive in my singing, I hear a tone and replicate it without thinking about where it falls in an octave etc. Muddying up things with labeling notes just slows me down, it's much easier to just match pitch. I think that is what is so interesting about these videos, it breaks things down on a level I can't even comprehend.

Like I understand the value of this level of understanding as this is probably why I can't create my own music, I don't understand what makes something sound good, I only understand how to replicate it. I seem to just have that nature about me though, I realized I struggled so much in math because I was literally just memorizing answers instead of learning to compute, I trained my brain to recognize a pattern of numbers and just spit out the answer.

One of my favorite things about this song is the drumbeat. Once it comes in at the start it completely changes the feel of the song in a really exciting way, and then over the course of the song the vocals trail off a bit and I think lower in volume slightly? and it starts to seem like the drums are drowning them out

Even though Simon's is technicaly easier, it feels very strange to sing it because, as you said, we are most familiar with the main melody so it sounds very strange when I'm practicing alone in my room. To be honest, while I had "heard" this song before, I never "listened" to it until after the Disturbed cover. The cover was somber and powerful in a way that refused to be background noise, while the original was warm and peaceful, so I could tune out the message without realizing it and shop. And obviously I missed something important by not really listening to it.

I can't see a future where Disturbed plays quietly over the grocery store PA system, so hopefully it continues to be an anchor point to get future people like me to really pay attention to the original.

That's not to say I like the original, I don't, but it's rewarding to experience it and listen to the message it conveys even if I don't enjoy it. Sorry, I know you do enjoy it, but the way it feels numb to what's going on is thematically appropriate, but loses me as a listener. I want to be angry or sad about it, not hopeless, and the emotional presentation conflicts with my emotional response.

Thanks for this one - first time I saw the heads-up email (benefits of being an Elephant Club person - thanks for the mention there, too) and got really excited. Alongside learning theory from you, I have a penchant for "reaction" vids. (I know, they shouldn't necessarily go together - but I'm a Shakespearean actor who also likes cheesy junk sometimes. Go figure.) And your vid of this song showed up next to a suggested reaction to the Disturbed version (which I like a lot, so maybe some of the other followers will fight me about it). In the final verse Simon changes his line slightly to hit his highest note earlier than usual which sounds climactic while at the same time adding even more oblique motion.
An obvious thing is that the word "silence" is sung in unison the last time around. What's weird is that every other time they only hit the unison on the latter syllable. I wonder why they didn't do it entirely in unison every time or entirely in 2-part harmony except for the last time.

I don't know if someone already mentioned it, but anyway. When you said that they were telling different stories with the exact same words, this just blew my mind.

Because of his part being more dinamic, that denotes emotion, I think Garfunkel's like a new expectator of the absurds he's witnessing (people talking without speaking, the neon God, etc.) and thus is trying to help these people more vividly.

On the other hand, Simon is monotonous, like he's an old expectator. He still tries to help and warn people, but not as vividly as the other, like he doesn't really want to spend much time and energy with something he's already resignated to.

Thanks for (kind of) helping me understand why this was always one which definitely confused me time-wise. Like, it sounds as if it's in 4-4 timing, and I think it is, but whenever I try to dance to it, I kind of get lost. Somehow, they do something funky with the singing or something that makes it easy to lose the rhythm if you're trying to sort it out in neat little groups of 4 beats (which is what you want to do if you're trying to dance to a song, at least if you're me, and on more of a beginner level).

Basically, to a dance student such as myself, the 3 time signatures are waltz, not-waltz and can't-dance-to-it, ha ha.

I didn't realize there were two versions from S&G. After watching this video I went and listened to both, the original acoustic and the more common "remix". I have to say I prefer the remix and not just because I'm more familiar with it. The original sounds like it has a tempo change in the middle and almost sounds cheery, when I think this song really needs to remain in a somber tone like it starts out as. I think I also prefer the voices of S&G to be from a common or almost common point center stage. When they are hard separated left and right, it kinda takes me out of enjoying the song and focusing on who is where in the sound stage. There are songs where that effect works, I just don't think it suits this song as well as it could. Maybe have them just to left and right of center, enough to be separated, but still in close proximity. I think the addition of the other instruments really adds some depth to the song which helps make it feel a bit more heavy in it's emotional weight.

That all being said, as much as I like the S&G version of the Sound of Silence (and Bridge Over Troubled Water), and as much as I usually dislike covers of already very popular and well known songs, I think Disturbed actually improved on a nearly perfect song with their rendition. The tempo was slowed down, and the tone of David Draiman stays in an almost despaired and straining element through out the song, even when he uses the power of his voice which still sounds a bit restrained, almost like the story being told is heavily weighing him down, emotionally and physically. I also like the change to the piano for the introduction, over the guitar, as I think it adds a bit of weight and despair to song. And before anyone accuses me of being a Disturbed fan and that's why I prefer I most certainly am not a Disturbed fan. I'm not really into their Nu Metal/Alternative metal sound. They have a couple other songs I think are okay, but I've never felt I needed to listen to them at any point, where as their cover of Sound of Silence I definitely have searched out and listened to, because it's so well done.

So in short it's just a great song and there are versions for different people.

@vorpal blade Have you listened to the studio version or the live version? The live version isn't nearly as good as the studio version that Disturbed did. You're also the first person I've ever heard that says they don't like it. I'm not a fan of Disturbed normally, but that cover is fire.

I agree with you on all this. I believe "silence" was ambiguous. And I don't think it was in either key but both at the same time. His old friend was neither "happy" or "sad" and he plays it out by playing in both minor and major. Truly brilliant.

Doves are actually the same family of birds as Pigeons, we tend to call the smaller ones doves and the larger ones pigeons cause reasons xD some species have common names that are both...

Incidentally there's also a rockband called The Doves but I wouldn't recommend analysing that either...

Maybe Carpenter's Close to you could be encouraged though... why do birds suddenly ap.... is taken out by a sniper

Many years ago I tried making a sound-on-sound recording of this on a reel-to-reel tape machine using nothing but a monophonic synthesizer and working solely from memory. Now I have the explanation as to why it didn't work out the way I had hoped. A great song, anyway. Thanks for sharing the analysis.

I agree with 12tone that SOS (Coincidence? I think not.) is Paul's best lyrics -- it has haunted me for five decades and it still causes shivers. Knowing that the music has at least as many layers is gratifying. Thanks.

+rugg1999 I have perfect pitch, so when I hear the chords I think of them as being in Eb Minor. It isn't so much of a difference in the recording than in my own interpretation. I think 12tone has the right of it when he says it's D# Minor. I just never thought of it that way.

I've never before been happy to be tone deaf. Waht? Anyway, I pick up on rhythms more than harmonies, and yeah, that ".... ... ... of silence," that stretched out bit before "of silence" is the thing that resonates with me.

In the Netherlands they don’t call it a backdoor resolution, they call it a bVII moldur.. the explanation is that it’s a jazz players way of making the (most Christmasy chord of) IV-6, which they call a IV moldur, which means it’s a IV chord borrowed from the parallel minor scale, and making it into a II-V so you can play all your bebop licks (in short you get F-7 Bb7 out of just having a F-6 for two bars)
