Understand
Sound-Silence Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm listening to everything that happens in the world
Man I got a God given purpose it's important
I cannot back down even though people wanna
Stay the same and not realize people they are
Putting down are hurting in their souls
I am a dependent on the one called the Lord
Even if you're smoking doing drugs I still accept who you are yes
I am a rapper who does not judge
I got too many people to love
I have people who hit me up with issues they cannot solve
Yeah my brain's up in the altitudes I will not let it down
All the way from Michigan I travel into town
Busking all around, Wisconsin Dells
Praise God I'm lost but I'm found turn my music up loud
If you got an issue with how society's built
I always say the same thing just accept yourself
For who you are there is not much to say just don't
Care what they say because when you are getting judged
By those who don't understand it is not you it's them
What I gotta say other than what I believe in man
I'd be a liar if I said that I'm leaving

Don't let others judge you because
We're the same yes we're all flesh

Don't let others get to you
Because they don't understand, please understand

Overall Meaning

In the song "Understand" by Sound-Silence, the artist expresses his perspective on the world. He describes himself as someone who is aware of everything that happens in the world and believes that he has a purpose given by God that is significant. Although there are people who want to stay the same and do not realize the impact of their actions on others, he cannot back down from his beliefs.

The rapper mentions that he is dependent on the Lord, no matter what people do or how much they struggle. He does not judge people who are smoking and doing drugs; rather, he accepts them for who they are. He has too many people to love and who come to him with issues they cannot solve. He also talks about how he travels around, busking and playing in different towns. He may be lost, but he is found through his music and his faith.

Sound-Silence also talks about the importance of self-acceptance and not caring about what people say. He encourages listeners to understand that we are all the same, made of flesh, and not let others' judgments affect us. In essence, the song is about staying true to oneself, having faith, and spreading love.

Me: completely lacking any musical theory knowledge
Also me: hmmm yes I do understand this song on a deeper level indeed

Protostar Gaming

If you want to actually learn a bit more, watch Signals Music Studio(he focuses on the songwriting aspect of music theory) and Adam Neely(he's more of a Jazz musician, and is kind of the Vsauce of music theory.

Amy Crunch

You're hurting people.

@Amy Crunch heh?

ECopas

@Aaron O'Connor Why is it that if you add a “harumph”, a “Well I say”, or an “indeed” you automatically gain intellectual points to your sentence ?

Aaron O'Connor

@ECopas It is the ancient wisdom

Great analysis of one of my favorite recordings! Simon's part is just barely in my weak range as a mediocre singer but it's one of the most satisfying musical things I can perform if I'm with a decent singer. I'm surprised you said you get flack for mentioning relative modulations. They are, in my opinion, a critical element to modern music. I teach "Boys Of Summer" by Don Henley to my students to demonstrate relative modulations from minor to major for verses + choruses, but I consider the bridge to be a brief modulation into relative Lydian-would you agree?

12tone

It's not relative modulations specifically, I just always get flack whenever I consider something in anything but the most obvious key. Check the comments of, say, my Message In A Bottle video. (Although it's mostly nice and respectful, I was being a bit facetious for comedy.)

Protip: Watching this video while it's muted does not actually help you understand the sound of silence

You're like Justin Y you're in the comments of every vid
