Speak
Southern Lights Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Don’t tell me I should leave, and not fight
Because I can hear the words you said through the reverence in your eyes.

That doesn’t mean I can be easily subdued
You are confused and I am left feeling as if I am dead to you
I heard the words you said through the reverence in your eyes

A word left unspoken is but a token on your chest
Held by silver thread that will tarnish in the end
And leave its mark around your neck

Speak or fade
I have been left for the vultures and I would die to do the same to you
Speak easy; all I need is to bleed freely
Speak or fade

I said my piece before I closed my mind
You are a smoke blown free, washed by the wind
Made clean, when mingled with eternity
So speak or leave, what you’ve left to reap these dead sheaves of regret
That were sown from seeds these tears I wept for you.

This is the end
I won’t contend

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Speak by Southern Lights talks about not backing down in a difficult situation. The first verse implies that someone is telling the singer to leave and not fight, but the singer insists that they won't be easily subdued. They can hear the words being said by the person advising them to give up on the situation through their revered eyes. The singer feels dead inside, and even though they're confused, they're not giving up without a fight. The second verse contains the metaphor of silver thread, representing a word left unspoken, which merely becomes a token on someone's chest. It eventually tarnishes and leaves its mark on their neck. The chorus of the song goes, "Speak or fade, I have been left for the vultures, and I would die to do the same to you. Speak easy; all I need is to bleed freely. Speak or fade." The singer wants the person advising them to speak up about what they're feeling or fade away so that they can move on. The third verse contains the imagery of someone being cleansed by mingling with eternity. The singer feels that if the person advising them to give up leaves or speaks up, they can finally let go of the regret they've been feeling.

Line by Line Meaning

Don’t tell me I should leave, and not fight
Don't try to persuade me to give up and leave without a fight because your eyes reveal that you know it's not the right thing to do.

Because I can hear the words you said through the reverence in your eyes.
I can tell that you care about me and that's why you're suggesting I leave, but I can still hear the actual words you're saying and know it's not what I want to do.

That doesn’t mean I can be easily subdued
Just because you care about me and suggest I leave doesn't mean I'll give up easily without a fight.

You are confused and I am left feeling as if I am dead to you
You're not sure what to do or say, and I feel like you're giving up on me or don't care anymore.

A word left unspoken is but a token on your chest
If you don't say what needs to be said, it won't hold any real value or weight.

Held by silver thread that will tarnish in the end
Even something that seems precious or valuable (like a token on your chest) will eventually lose its worth over time.

And leave its mark around your neck
Not only will that token lose its value, but it may even become a burden or source of guilt (a mark around your neck) because you didn't act on it.

Speak or fade
Either speak up and say what needs to be said or fade away and lose the chance to make a difference in this situation.

I have been left for the vultures and I would die to do the same to you

Made clean, when mingled with eternity
You may find clarity or peace (i.e. be made clean) when you think about the bigger picture or eternity.

So speak or leave, what you’ve left to reap these dead sheaves of regret
Either speak up and address the situation or leave, but know that your inaction will result in a harvest of regret.

That were sown from seeds these tears I wept for you.
I've cried for you and this situation, and the regret that will come will be a result of the seeds of inaction that were planted through our inability to communicate effectively.
