Before the band, front girl Lele tasted success as a solo artist; touring the UK and Europe as support for big headliners including Crystal Castles, with the help from her sister and backing vocalist Kelly Jackson. Before putting together the current line-up, she wrote songs for SPEAKS with help from friends Larry Hibbitt (Hundred Reasons) and Radio 1 Rock DJ Dan P. Carter (A, Hexes).
Drummer, Kirk Budden, has played for Brighton hardcore outfit Trippin’ Violet and, more recently, has played drums for Brighton band The Black Rash and dubstep DJ Tek One. He is joined by guitarist Jake Tyler, formerly of post-hardcore outfit This City, and bassist Dan Palmer (formerly of Belisha, Zen Motel and Cousin Joey). Completing the line-up is synth player/guitarist/backing vocalist Liam Dowling, who is also still an active member of Brighton avant-garde legends Vile Imbeciles and The Black Rash.
Together, the band infuses the creativity and raw energy of alternative and heavy music, with the tightness and lyrical finesse of hip hop.

The lyrics of Speaks's song "Can't" explore themes of self-confidence, independence, and avoiding toxic relationships. In the first verse by Bossman Dulah, he emphasizes his preference for focusing on his personal growth and success rather than pursuing a superficial relationship. He cleverly compares his skills in rolling up "fire"-like gas to his sharp metaphors, highlighting his talent and self-assurance. He dismisses the idea of chasing after someone based on their material possessions, suggesting that true worth lies in being a reliable and solid individual.
The chorus reinforces the idea that self-respect and discernment are key in relationships. The line "playaz get chose but the thirst is real" underscores the pressure some may feel to conform to societal expectations. However, the refrain of "I can't" emphasizes a refusal to engage in behavior that compromises one's integrity. It critiques the notion of men acting out of desperation or misplaced emotions, leading to being "stranded" or betrayed by their own actions.
In the second verse by Walt B, he echoes the sentiment of valuing oneself and not succumbing to superficial temptations. He prioritizes financial stability and self-preservation over fleeting pleasures, cautioning against risky behaviors. The contrast between being strategic and thoughtful in relationships, as opposed to being impulsive and reckless, is emphasized through his lyrics. Walt B's insistence on authenticity and respect in his interactions reflects a desire for genuine connections and mutually beneficial partnerships.
Bossman Dulah returns in the third verse with a continuation of themes of self-awareness and discernment. He warns against falling for manipulative tactics and urges listeners to maintain their self-respect. The mention of not succumbing to superficial beauty or materialistic desires highlights a deeper understanding of what truly matters in relationships. The reference to discerning between counterfeit and genuine connections suggests a need to be vigilant and wise in choosing partners who align with one's values.
Overall, the lyrics of "Can't" by Speaks emphasize the importance of self-worth, integrity, and self-improvement in navigating relationships. The refusal to compromise on one's principles and the reminder to prioritize personal growth and genuine connections serve as empowering messages for listeners to stay true to themselves and make choices that lead to positive outcomes.
