The band formed in the early 1990's in Bakersfield, CA (the same hometown as Korn) and were forced to be patient as several bands around them grew and hit fame before they were even recognized.
Leading this modern band is the vocalist Shannon Harris; who can almost be mistaken as a male voice on the record. Bill Thompson plays guitar, "Mfat" pounds bass, and Jeff Jones is on drums.
After moving from Bakersfield to the San Francisco Bay Area, Spike 1000 sold their own five song demo CD at their own concerts, and finally in 2001 Columbia Records entered a deal with them and Spike 1000 released their debut album "Waste of Skin".

Don't you see me?
Streams of self esteem
Below belts over-heated again
Look, look, look, look at you
Child, easy like young skin
You're quizzed on the rotten side
Every slant in place
Spill your guts, I spit in your face
Don't you see this is not how I'm gonna be?
(Oh my god)
I see it all if I'm pushed up against the wall
(Oh my god)
Don't you see this is not how I'm gonna be?
I see it all if I'm pushed up against this wall
Age of idiots when you dare like this
And how come you run
When you know that I'm tied to the nerves
On the edge of your fingers?
Don't stop and make it linger
Jump in the wrong place, wrong time
Everybody thinks you're so sublime
When you're sucking spikes
And laying sideways again
Don't you see this is not how I'm gonna be?
(Oh my god)
I see it all if I'm pushed up against the wall
(Oh my god)
Don't you see this is not how I'm gonna be?
I see it all if I'm pushed up against this wall
Don't you see this is not how I'm gonna be?
Don't you see this is not how I'm gonna be?
Don't you see this is not how I'm gonna be?
Good luck, good luck, good luck
You're sucking spikes again
Good luck, good luck, good luck
You're sucking spikes again
Good luck, good luck, good luck
You're sucking spikes again
Good luck, good luck, good luck
Don't you see me?
Nice try, but your lifetime is jaded
Little shop of horrors
Even steps outdated
Wanna be a warped version of my sun
Then let yourself in
Common cause is a lack of air
So don't you try and fight me now
And you're mine and I'll just do it again
Don't you see this is not how I'm gonna be?
(Oh my god)
I see it all if I'm pushed up against the wall
(Oh my god)
Don't you see this is not how I'm gonna be?
I see it all if I'm pushed up against this
Good luck, good luck, good luck
You're sucking spikes again
Good luck, good luck, good luck
You're sucking spikes again
Good luck, good luck, good luck
You're sucking spikes again
Good luck, good luck, good luck
Don't you see me?
The song "Sucking Spikes" by Spike 1000 is a heavy and intense track that explores themes of self-esteem, pressure, and the struggle to keep one's integrity in the face of societal pressure. The first verse speaks of a person who is being pressured to conform to societal expectations of beauty and sex appeal, represented by the "streams of self-esteem" and "belts over-heated." The line "quizzed on the rotten side" may suggest that the pressure to conform comes at a cost, perhaps involving morally questionable behaviors. The singer of the song refuses to give in to this pressure, saying "Don't you see this is not how I'm gonna be?" and asserting their agency in the face of societal expectations.
The second verse seems to address a specific person or group who are mocking or belittling the singer for not conforming. This group is described as "idiots" and the singer asserts that they are tied to the nerves on the edge of their fingers, implying that they are anxious and driven by insecurity. The line "everybody thinks you're so sublime when you're sucking spikes" may be a reference to drug use, suggesting that the group is trying to escape their own insecurities through substance abuse. The repeated refrain of "good luck, good luck, good luck, you're sucking spikes again" is a taunt directed at this group, suggesting that their attempts to escape their problems through destructive behaviors are doomed to fail.
Overall, "Sucking Spikes" is a song that explores the theme of individualism and the pressure to conform to societal expectations. It suggests that true self-worth comes not from conforming to external pressures but from asserting one's own agency and integrity.
