Stonehenge
Spin̈al Tap Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Hundreds of years before the dawn of history
Lived a strange race of people, the Druids
No one knows who they were or what they were doing
But their legacy remains
Hewn into the living rock, of Stonehenge
Where the banshees live and they do live well
Stonehenge! Where a man's a man
And the children dance to the Pipes of Pan
Hey!
Stonehenge! 'Tis a magic place
Where the moon doth rise with a dragon's face
Stonehenge! Where the virgins lie
And the prayers of devils fill the midnight sky
And you my love, won't you take my hand?
We'll go back in time to that mystic land
Where the dew drops cry and the cats meow
I will take you there, I will show you how
Oh!
And oh how they danced
The little children of Stonehenge
Beneath the haunted moon
For fear that daybreak might come too soon
And where are they now?
The little people of Stonehenge
And what would they say to us?
If we were here, tonight
Spinal Tap's song Stonehenge is an ode to the ancient monument in England, a place of great mystery and intrigue. The song opens with references to the Druids, an ancient race of people who lived hundreds of years before the dawn of recorded history. The song posits that while no one knows exactly who the Druids were or what they were doing, their legacy remains in the form of Stonehenge, "hewn into the living rock." The lyrics then describe Stonehenge as a place where demons dwell and banshees live well, where a man is a man and children dance to the pipes of Pan. According to the song, Stonehenge is a magic place where the moon rises with a dragon's face, where virgins lie and the prayers of devils fill the midnight sky.
The second half of the song takes the form of an invitation to a loved one to travel back in time to the land of Stonehenge, where the dew drops cry and the cats meow. The song climaxes with the image of the little children of Stonehenge dancing beneath the haunted moon, afraid that daybreak might come too soon. The song ends with a question: where are they now, the little people of Stonehenge? And what would they say to us if we were here tonight?
Stonehenge is a powerful song that captures the magic and mystery of one of England's greatest cultural treasures. The song's haunting melody and eerie lyrics create a sense of otherworldly wonder, evoking the strange, mystical power of the monument itself.

... I wasn't touchin', I was just pointing.
Well, DON'T point, even.
Don't even point?
NO!
... Can I look at it?
NO!!!

Absolute classic I could listen to 11 consecutive times. If Abbott & Costello's rendition of "Who's on First" & CCR (John Fogerty) version of the song "Centerfield" can be in the Baseball Hall of Fame, I see no reason that the film "This is Spinal Tap" shouldn't be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
@Jacksonkellyfreak
It's a shame this clip only goes 2:10. It should go 2:11.
@duckduckgoismuchbetter
Yes, but why not just take 2:10 and make it one second longer and call it the new 2:10?? Lol.
