The band began in 1999 as a project fronted by Simone Salvatori (a.k.a. "Hellvis"), a guitarist and singer from Italy, and has since worked extensively with other projects in the same genre of neofolk, along with releasing their own music to the public.
Spiritual Front's so-called "Mafia-Folk" has been in release since 1999, in which time Simone Salvatori, the lyricist and conceptualist behind SF, has been known to create a unique feel within their traditionally folk style. Their most noticeable recurring output is Simone's charismatic playing of the acoustic guitar, along with martial drum beats characteristic of the neofolk genre. Slow and often melancholic vocals (leaning towards dark folk) are often contrasted with cabaret-like, somewhat comedic "swing-singing" and are reminicent of swing revival sound (particularly noticeable in their album Nihilist Cocktails For Calypso Inferno), showing the absolute dichotomy of Salvatori's compositions. Emotional piano chords are also frequently featured, with occasional violin playing and solos.
The use of field recording is also apparent in many of Spiritual Front's albums, often attributing an ambient feel to their work.

No Kisses On The Mouth
Spiritual Front Lyrics

Nor voices can make my naked body shiver
But I need a slave
Who will stab me and a faithful dog
That will devour my body
Love me while I confided you my intentions
'Cos you know I will fail
Love my childish purity
The limit of love is that
Of needin' always an accomplice
I've lil' in my pocket just some sand and some stupid truth
But enough to redeem your lack of style
And your vague sense of duty
My certainty falls while your saliva tastes like my sex
My tongue furrows your seals
While the night whispers our end
The limit of love is that
Of needin' always an accomplice
The lyrics to Spiritual Front's song "No Kisses On The Mouth" express a desire to indulge in the darker aspects of love, a longing to be dominated and consumed by another. The singer is resigned to the fact that they will fail in their pursuit of this kind of love, but nonetheless seeks out a partner who will understand and fulfill their desires. The opening lines, "There are no streets for my heart/ Nor voices can make my naked body shiver," suggests a sense of emotional and physical isolation that can only be overcome through a kind of violent intimacy. The imagery of the faithful dog and the stabbing slave evoke a sense of surrender and submission, while the line "Love my childish purity/ 'Cos you know I'd lick every sin your flesh" suggests a willingness to explore and embrace taboo desires.
Throughout the song, there is a sense that the singer has little to offer but their own vulnerability and honesty, as they sing "I've lil' in my pocket just some sand and some stupid truth/ But enough to redeem your lack of style/ And your vague sense of duty." They seem to recognize the limitations of their own needs and desires, but express a hope that they can find someone who will accept them regardless. Ultimately, the song seems to argue that love can only flourish when one has a willing accomplice to share in one's darkest impulses, even if these impulses ultimately lead to an untimely end.
