The Two Sides of Monsieur Valentine
Spoon Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Every morning I've got a new chance
I want to land the part of Eddie in The Stranger Dance
'Cause he gets to sword fight the duke
He kidnaps the queen
And you think the score's set but you can't truly see
Til you know the two sides of Monsieur Valentine
Til you know the two sides of Monsieur Valentine
Every morning I pull on them pants
Mmm but I don't get out so much since I acquired St. Vitus dance
I turn the news on a while
I practice my scene
You think things are straight but they're not what they seem
Til you know the two sides of Monsieur Valentine
In his coat and his boots and his blackheart machine
No, no one knows the two sides of Monsieur Valentine

Every morning I've got a new chance
I want to play the part of Eddie in The Stranger Dance
He makes love to the duke
He sword fights the queen
He steals the whole show in his last dying scene
No one sees the two sides of Monsieur Valentine
No, no one sees the two sides of Monsieur Valentine

No one sees the two sides of Monsieur Valentine
Mmm hmmm mmm hmm hmm hmm

Overall Meaning

The song “The Two Sides of Monsieur Valentine” by Spoon talks about a person with a split personality or a dual identity represented by the characters of Eddie and Monsieur Valentine. The singer talks about how he wakes up every morning with the hope of landing a role in a play where he could play the character of Eddie who he admires for his sword-fighting skills and kidnapping the queen, referring to the darker side of his personality. The singer describes the character of Eddie as someone who steals the whole show in his last dying scene, implying that he has a charismatic personality.

However, the second part of the song talks about how the singer himself doesn’t get out much since he acquired St. Vitus dance, a condition that causes involuntary movements, disconnecting him from reality. He talks about how he turns on the news and practices his scene, implying that he is trying to overcome his condition by indulging in his passion for acting. The singer implies that there is a sense of duality in his own personality, much like the character of Monsieur Valentine, who is described as having two sides, portrayed by the coat and boots he wears and his blackheart machine, indicating his darker side.

The song highlights the idea that everyone has a dual identity or two distinct personalities, and it takes time to know someone's true nature. The singer refers to the characters of Eddie and Monsieur Valentine, as both have distinct personalities. The song’s lyrics emphasize that one cannot judge someone just by their outside appearance, as sometimes people may have hidden sides to them, much like the character of Monsieur Valentine.

I. CAN’T. get over that distorted, yet faint vocal bit around 0:12. It’s so short, but there’s something so sentimental and memorable about it.

Despite hailing from Austin, Texas, Spoon’s sound has always been decidedly British New Wave – as in Elvis Costello and the Attractions, Nick Lowe, Dave Edmunds, and The Squeeze. Some critics compared the sound to the Beatles’ “Glass Onion,” from The White Album - a deft comparison, especially in the tune's psychedelic bridge, which sounds right out of the Lennon/McCartney and George Martin playbook. Interestingly, Spoon’s emerged from the long-term aesthetic partnership between the lead singer and songwriter Britt Daniel and drummer Jim Eno, in whose Austin studio the band rehearsed and prepared most of their numbers. In the end, this is rock ‘n roll at its finest.

Spoon was right; gimme fiction, reality is too much for anyone to take all the time.

Wonderful mid-70s US rock sound to this (#Steppenwolf, perhaps?) - had to listen again for the childhood memories it triggers of listening to the radio of many a night-time on a roadside in a camper-van back then...
"...He makes love to the Duke, he sword-fights the Queen..." - that's a production I'd pay to see!
Thumbs-up if #Hollyoaks brought you here, BTW... 😁📺
