The band, from Burlington, Ontario, consisted of Gordon Deppe (vocals and guitar), Sandy Horne (vocals and bass), Rob Preuss (keyboards and piano) and Derrick Ross (drums). Preuss also replaced Brett Wickens in 1980.
In the late eighties, Preuss went on to play with Honeymoon Suite and Ross left the band and were replaced by Scott MacDonald and Steve Kendry.
The band released five albums (and a soundtrack that was credited to Gordon Deppe but included a couple songs from the "Tell No Lies" ep).
Their most popular songs included " Romantic Traffic", "Nova Heart", "Old Emotions" and "Tell No Lies".
Gordon Deppe is currently a music programmer for one of the Galaxie Music Network (television) channels in Canada.

Nova Heart -
Spoons Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I walk your streets and live in your towns
Temporarily
Architects of the world
But soon we'll be on our own
And I'll sleep in your
Nova heart
As things come apart
I'll hide in your
Nova heart
At ease with the thought
That this nova won't burn out
Gentlemen of the world
I read your books and look at your art
Hesitantly
Gentlemen of the world
You want to educate our young
But soon they'll be on their own
And I'll sleep in your
Nova heart
As things come apart
I'll hide in your
Nova heart
At ease with my thoughts
And I'll sleep in your
Nova heart
As things come apart
and I'll rest in your
Nova heart
At ease with the thought
That this nova won't burn out.
The lyrics of Spoons' "Nova Heart" express a sense of impending disconnection and the singer's desire for comfort and security within a changing world. The song starts off by addressing the "architects of the world," likely referring to politicians or other figures of authority who have shaped society. The singer admits to living within their creations, but acknowledges that soon they will have to navigate the world independently. The repeated phrase "I'll sleep in your nova heart" suggests a desire to find safety and shelter within the changing landscape.
The second half of the song addresses the "gentlemen of the world," which could refer to educators or other figures who are responsible for shaping minds and passing down knowledge. The singer suggests that while they appreciate their attempts to educate the youth, ultimately these young people will have to face the world on their own. Once again, the repeated refrain expresses a desire for safety and comfort within the "nova heart" that won't burn out.
Overall, "Nova Heart" can be seen as a reflection on the shifting nature of society, with the singer expressing a sense of uncertainty and desire for stability in the face of change. The use of the word "nova" suggests a sense of explosive change, but the repeated refrain of the "nova heart" provides a sense of hope and comfort within that chaos.

40 years after its release, I discovered this song (and the band) yesterday, by accident, because I selected the wrong radio station when I was at work. What a happy mistake: I'm totally hooked on this tune. It has that "magic thing" that all the good songs from the 80s seems to have, which I can't describe using words but I can feel it from my head to my toes. And I love it!!

@Chris CarrolIt's complicated to scape the influence of the most powerful country in the world. You can feel it here in Europe too so, when you're living next door...
In any case (and no offense, please, I don't want to sound disrespectful) saying America instead of USA doesn't help to change that perception you are the 51st State. Fortunately America is more than just the USA.

If you think this is good, Romantic Traffic takes the cake. Old emotions is also a great one too. Toronto band.

I listen to a huge array of music but, yes, this strikes me the right way and I can easily call it one of my favourites of all time! As a young lad we lived close to Sandy's home and everytime going past I'd look excitedly hoping to see her, my first celebrity crush!
