Spring: British band (1970's)
Spring were a Leicester-based British progressive rock band that represented the early 1970s progressive rock movement.
A one-shot band, it recorded only one album in its career, a self-titled LP released in 1971. Spring's music is notable for the use of the mellotron with three of the its five members credited with playing that instrument on the album.
Members[edit]
Spring originally consisted of Pat Moran (vocals), Ray Martinez (guitars), Kips Brown (keyboards), Pick Withers (drums) and Adrian Maloney (bass), all of whom had previously played in various local Leicester bands.
A turning point in Spring's fortunes happened after a gig in Cardiff, when the band's van broke down somewhere in the Welsh countryside, coincidentally very near where producer/engineer Kingsley Ward had recently set up Rockfield Studios. Ward would later marvel at the "coincidence of meeting a group with a broken down truck in your own home town when you have previously spent months traipsing around the country in search of talent". He was particularly intrigued by the fact that they owned a Mellotron, and "invited them down the following week for an audition with my brother Charles and myself", the outcome of which was "good enough for us to want to be involved with them". Several demo sessions followed. The band were rehearsing at Rockfield when producer Gus Dudgeon (of David Bowie and Elton John fame) dropped by to check the studio out, heard them play and expressed interest in producing them. A few months later, sessions took place at both Rockfield and London's Trident Studios, and the resulting album was released on the RCA/Neon label in 1971.
In spite of supporting Velvet Underground on a UK tour, plus Keith Christmas and The Sutherland Brothers on various dates, the band broke up in 1972 following aborted attempts at recording a second album. Two previously unreleased songs from these sessions (featuring new bassist Peter Decindis) appeared on The Laser's Edge's 1992 CD reissue of the album, along with "Fool's Gold" from the first album sessions. Moran later worked as sound engineer at Rockfield Studios, notably for Van der Graaf Generator and Robert Plant; he died in early 2011. Martinez became an in-demand session guitarist, working with the likes of Alkatraz, Michael Chapman, Gypsy, Tim Rose and Robert Plant. Pick Withers later became the drummer for Dire Straits, playing on their first four records. Kips Brown became a session musician, playing with Andy Fairweather Low and others, and was in a later band called 'Wellington'. Adrian Moloney returned to the Midlands, where he worked alongside several well-known artists and groups. A solo career as a jobbing musician and minor impresario took him all over the Midlands, and also to Tenerife for several summer seasons. He was working right up to his premature death in 2010.
Pat Moran became a notable Record Producer and worked with Lou Gramm, Robert Plant Iggy Pop, Edie Brickell and the new Bohemians as well as many others. For verification check Pat's obituary in the Guardian newspaper. On 25 May 2015 a double CD of Spring released on Esoteric Records, a part of Cherry Red Records, London. 'Bout to see my boo, it's about 6 o'clock
Love is love, it'd been a long time comin'
9 long years, I know she missed my lovin'
Huggin', kissin' in the scent of the kid
She gonna fall out when she see me at the crib
Ding dong, can I speak to Bamboo?
It's me Penelope, stop actin' a fool
Not a phone call? Not a card in the mail?"
For real a phone call? Stop
You know I had to up and leave
I told you I'll be back, girl, but you ain't believe
She told me 9 was too long, and she got a new man
One who gon' stay and hold it down for the fam
So scram, there's no more love for the kid
So I turned my head down and walked away from the crib
Loved so many times
I've been alone so long
Had to pull myself together
Find my heart a brand new home
Got a good thing goin' on
Can't let you mess with my flow
Too little, too late
Love don't live here no more
(Love is love, Tony's back up on the aisle)
(Gone for 9 years like 9 months to a child)
Cried so many times
(Where's my boo at? I need to see Bamboo)
(I got a lot of things on my mind, to explain to you)
Love don't live here no more
Love don't live here no more
It's like that?
Okay then where you put all my stuff at then?
You know, I thought, you know I swear he's, he been doin' this for too long
I done came home, you got another man, you know what
Oh word, so you over it? That's absurd
I never did a damn thing to deserved it
This is a man's world, I go away come home lookin' for you
Now you fuckin' up the plans, girl
You another man's girl, that ain't kosher
Once you see the kid's face you're supposed to
Drop what you're doin', show your loyalty and love
Step out on the porch with a kiss and a hug
Yo you buggin'
Loved so many times
I've been alone so long
Had to pull myself together
Find my heart a brand new home
Got a good thing goin' on
Can't let you mess with my flow
Too little, too late
Love don't live here no more
(Love is love, Tony's back up on the aisle)
(Gone for 9 years like 9 months to a child)
Cried so many times
(Where's my boo at? I need to see Bamboo)
(I got a lot of things on my mind, to explain to you)
Love don't live here no more
Love don't live here no more
The lyrics of Spring's song "Live On Love" tell the story of a man named Tony who returns home after being away for nine years. Tony is excited to see his partner, Bamboo, and expresses his love and anticipation by feeling fresh and walking down the block. He mentions that love is love and acknowledges that it has been a long time coming. Tony believes that Bamboo must have missed his love during his absence and imagines a joyful reunion.
However, when Tony arrives at Bamboo's house and calls for her, she initially reacts with surprise and disbelief. She thought Tony was dead and expresses her disappointment that he did not reach out to her in any way during his long absence. Bamboo admits that she has moved on and found a new man who is there for her and her family. This revelation shatters Tony's hopes of rekindling their love, and he sadly walks away from the house, understanding that there is no more love for him there.
The chorus emphasizes Tony's experiences of being alone for a long time and having to rebuild himself emotionally. He highlights that he cannot allow Bamboo to disrupt his newfound stability, which he refers to as his "flow." Tony believes that it is too little and too late for their love to survive, stating that love no longer resides in their relationship. The lyrics also mention a backup singer named Penelope, who seems to sympathize with Tony's situation and supports him on his journey to find a new home for his heart.
In the third verse, Tony confronts Bamboo about her choices, expressing his disbelief and disappointment. He questions why she would throw away their relationship and start a new one while he was away. He asserts his rights as the man, feeling that upon his return, Bamboo should have remained loyal and loving. Tony argues that she should have welcomed him with a kiss and a hug, showing her commitment and dedication.
Overall, the lyrics delve into themes of love, loyalty, and the consequences of long absences in a relationship. Tony's return reveals the heartbreak of finding that love has been lost. It showcases the challenges and complications that can arise when two people drift apart and try to rebuild their connection after a significant amount of time has passed.
