The Dark I Know Well
Spring Awakening [Original Broadway Cast] Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Martha
There is a part I can't tell
About the dark I know well

You say, "Time for bed now, child"
Mom just smiles that smile
Just like she never saw me
Just like she never saw me
So, I leave, wantin' just to hide
Knowin' deep inside
You are comin' to me
You are comin' to me

You say all you want is just a kiss good night
Then you hold me and you whisper, "Child, the Lord won't mind
It's just you and me
Child, you're a beauty
God, it's good, the lovin'—ain't it good tonight?
You ain't seen nothin' yet, gonna treat you right
It's just you and me
Child, you're a beauty"

Ilse
I don't scream, though I know it's wrong
I just play along
I lie there and breathe
Lie there and breathe
I wanna be strong
I want the world to find out
That you're dreamin' on me
Me and my "beauty"

Martha & Ilse
Me and my "beauty"

You say all you want is just a kiss good night
Then you hold me and you whisper, "Child the Lord won't mind
It's just you and me
Child, you're a beauty
God, it's good, the lovin'—ain't it good tonight?
You ain't seen nothin' yet, gonna teach you right
It's just you and me
Child, you're a beauty"

Overall Meaning

"The Dark I Know Well" is a song from the musical Spring Awakening, written by Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater. The song is sung by two characters, Martha and Ilse, who both have experienced sexual abuse. The lyrics reflect their pain, confusion, and shame about the abuse they have suffered.

Martha starts the song, singing about the darkness she has experienced. She describes how her mother ignores her abuse and how the abuser then comes to her at night. The abuser is familiar to her, so she describes this part as "the dark I know well." Ilse then joins in with her own experiences, describing how she doesn't fight back and hopes the world will find out what is happening to her. The song ends with both singers repeating the phrase "there is a part I can't tell about the dark I know well."

The lyrics of the song are meant to be powerful and emotional, depicting the experiences of the two characters. The music is haunting and atmospheric, adding to the overall tone of the song.

@liampd4342

Am I a tenor if I can sing this song in this key comfortably, none of the other boys in college could sing this song and they call themselves tenors, yet I get called baritone and I can sing this better than they can.

Although I can go fairly low I’m always able to sing higher every boy I’ve meant in my education who claims to be higher than me
Other examples include
Michael in the bathroom - Be more chill

All that’s known - Spring Awakening

freeze your brain - Heathers

meant to be yours - Heathers

Seventeen - Heathers

I’m alive - Next to Normal

And then there were none - Spring Awakening

"Child, the Lord won't mind." Oh Jesus. This kills me.

@evvildead

(Not so) fun fact- in the Deaf West production, during the second “you say all you want is just a kiss goodnight”, Ernst breaks away from the boys and starts signing with the girls. Originally, The Dark I Know Well was supposed to be a song for Ernst and Thea, while still keeping the same connotations, but it was changed to Ilse and Martha. So when Ernst breaks away from the boys to sing with the girls in the revival, it heavily implies he is a victim of sexual abuse as well

@noelle4939

That's so sad, poor ernst 😭

@vickiramsay6191

Powerful

@araw_buwan

I wish they didn't just imply it. Having a victim of abuse representing men would've amplified the message more imo

@natzappa8135

I wonder if there’s a recorded version like this out there

@smolpieceoftrash9101

I haven't seen anybody say this yet, and I'm sure everyone already got this but I'm new here. You know how she sings, "me and my beauty" she's referencing her and body as two different things because she feels like her body isn't hers anymore at this point

@Drakethatsme

I saw my older sister in this musical, and she played Ilse. The look in her eyes when she sang this was gut-wrenching.

@bighoodie4315

Drakethatsme I'm so sorry. I am so sorry.
