Baby Blue
Springfield (Dusty) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

(ooh, ooh, baby blue)
(what's wrong with you?)
Ooh, yeah
Getting back to business, baby
Just believe in me
Forget the things the wise men say
That's our philosophy
(i want you now)
I've got the feeling you want me, too
(show you how)
Oh, oh
Gonna catch a shaft of light
Shine it in your eyes
Gonna see what's on your mind
Before you realise

(i want you now)
I've got the feeling you want me, too
(show you how)
Ooh, hoo

(ooh, baby blue)
(what's wrong with you?)
You got me worn out trying
(ooh, baby blue)
(what can I do?)
Why don't you let me through to you?, oh, yeah, oh

If I follow my desire
Come inside your heart
It would be impossible
To stop what we might start

(i want you now)
I've got the feeling you want me, too
(show you how), so

(ooh, baby blue)
(what's wrong with you?)
You got me worn out trying
(ooh, baby blue)
(what can I do?)
Why don't you let me through to you?

(ooh, ooh, baby blue)
(what's wrong with you, baby blue?)
(ooh, ooh, baby blue)
What can I do?

If I follow my desire
Come inside your heart
It would be impossible
To stop what we might start

I want you now
I've got the feeling you want me, too
(show you how, ooh)
(ooh, baby blue)
(what's wrong with you?)
You got me worn out trying
(ooh, baby blue)
(what can I do?)
Why don't you let me through to you?
Ooh, baby blue
(what's wrong with you?)
You got me worn out trying
(ooh, baby blue)
(what can I do?)
Why don't you try to let me through to you?
(ooh, baby blue)
Oh, baby blue
(what's wrong with you?)
You got me worn out trying
(ooh, baby blue)

(what can I do?)
Oh, baby blue

Overall Meaning

In Dusty Springfield's "Baby Blue", the singer is trying to persuade someone to let her into their heart. She is confident that they want her too, despite the "wise men" who caution against following one's desires. The song has a bluesy, soulful sound that showcases Springfield's impressive vocal range.

The lyrics indicate a sense of urgency in the singer's desire to be with the person she is addressing. She sings, "If I follow my desire/Come inside your heart/It would be impossible/To stop what we might start." The use of light as a metaphor ("Gonna catch a shaft of light/Shine it in your eyes/Gonna see what's on your mind/Before you realize") suggests that she wants to reveal something that is hidden within the person.

Overall, the song is a passionate plea for connection and intimacy. Springfield's emotive delivery captures the intensity of the feelings being expressed.

The things that this woman could do with her voice. One of a kind.

Co-written by Trevor Horn and Geoff Downes of Buggles then Yes, and then if course Horn became a monster producer of ABC and many others in the 80s and 90s! I ran out and bought this single the moment I heard it, I wish Dusty had made an album with that team. Lots of people ventured into disco/dance recordings 1976-1981, but there is only one Dusty Springfield.

Interestingly enough, as you may know, Dusty Springfield sang as a guest on the Pet Shop Boys album "Actually" in 1987 (What Have I Done to Deserve This?). The following year, Trevor Horn produced the Pet Shop Boys "Introspective" album. Coincidence... I think not.

Malcolm Middleton

In my opinion the finest song she ever produced and one of the greatest dance tracks ever. Should have been a massive hit. Needs a Trevor Horn remix and re-release. 😎

Vince Degiorgio

Massive hit for me during my Dj's days - perfect
