Glory Days
Springsteen & E St. Band Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I had a friend was a big baseball player
Back in high school
He could throw that speedball by you
Make you look like a fool boy
Saw him the other night at this roadside bar
I was walking in, he was walking out
We went back inside sat down had a few drinks
But all he kept talking about was

Glory days well they'll pass you by
Glory days in the wink of a young girl's eye
Glory days, glory days

Well, there's a girl that lives up the block
Back in school she could turn all the boy's heads
Sometimes on a Friday I'll stop by
And have a few drinks after she put her kids to bed
Her and her husband Bobby well they split up
I guess it's two years gone by now
We just sit around talking about the old times
She says when she feels like crying
She starts laughing thinking about

Glory days well they'll pass you by
Glory days in the wink of a young girl's eye
Glory days, glory days

Think I'm going down to the well tonight
And I'm going to drink 'til I get my fill
And I hope when I get old I don't sit around thinking about it
But I probably will
Yeah, just sitting back trying to recapture
A little of the glory of, well time slips away
And leaves you with nothing mister but
Boring stories of

Glory days yeah they'll pass you by
Glory days in the wink of a young girl's eye
Glory days, glory days

Yeah, they'll pass you by

Glory days in the wink of a young girl's eye
Glory days, glory days

Overall Meaning

"Glory Days" by Bruce Springsteen is a song that reflects on the fleeting nature of youth and the passage of time. The lyrics tell the story of a protagonist who encounters two old acquaintances from his high school days. The first verse describes a former baseball player who had a talent for throwing a powerful pitch. However, the singer meets him in a roadside bar, where he seems trapped in the memories of his past achievements. Despite the passing of time, the baseball player clings to his "glory days" and continuously reminisces about his youthful triumphs.

In the second verse, the singer encounters a woman who used to turn heads in school. She is now a mother and has gone through a divorce. They sit and talk about their shared memories and the good times they had, using them as a source of comfort and laughter. The woman finds solace in these memories, using them to uplift her spirit when she feels like crying.

The chorus serves as a reminder that "glory days" are temporary and will inevitably pass. This is emphasized by the mention of the blink of a young girl's eye, highlighting how quickly time slips away. The singer then expresses a desire to go out and indulge in nostalgia, perhaps seeking solace or escape in memories from his own past.

Overall, "Glory Days" captures the bittersweet feeling of reminiscing about past achievements and the realization that time waits for no one. It conveys the theme of nostalgia and the way people often cling to memories as they grow older, yearning for the excitement and carefree days of their youth.

The great thing about Bruce and the entire band is that they never ever just go through the motions. No matter how many times they've performed a song, they always put their heart and soul into it, every single time....and we love them for it.

edthacow

I disagree. They are doing this as a job. There isn't any emotion left.

@Kevin Ball Not sure about that. Have you ever been to a Van Morrison gig...?😊

Kevin Ball

I think you'll find that is true of all live shows.
