Walls
St. John Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

So leave it what it is
Just give it time
Try your best to smile

Give her lengths of love
But the body is gone
Body is gone
Fondle candy wall
Evening is slime
What a waste of time

And although you still get by
Searching for the things
That make you come alive

It goes down to this
It's a-why you're here
Oh, why you walk

Fondle candy wall
Open hands
Well, that's the style

Bones crack many years
These gamut boys
Millionaires

Take me out on a ride
I like you well enough
To give you mother's arc

The streaks survives, in the night
The streaks survives, in the night
The streaks survives, in the night
The streaks survives, in the night

The streaks survives, in the night
The streaks survives, in the night

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to St. John's song Walls seem to be reflective of a persona that is going through difficult times in their life. The opening lyrics of "leave it what it is, just give it time, try your best to smile" seem to imply that things aren't going the way they should, but the only way to get through the situation is to wait it out and keep a positive attitude. The following line of "give her lengths of love but the body is gone" adds to the melancholy imagery that the persona is trying to convey. It would appear that despite the persona's best efforts to love and be loved, there are obstacles prevent them from fully experiencing that love.

The following verse seems to take a different direction by referencing a "candy wall" and other obscure imagery. It could be interpreted as a metaphor for the distractions and superficial pleasures that people indulge in to distract themselves from their problems. However, despite the distractions, the persona is still "searching for the things that make you come alive" which could imply that there is hope for better days to come.

The final verse is the most mysterious with the appearance of "gamut boys" and "mother's arc." The phrase "bones crack many years" could symbolize the hardships and trials that the persona has had to endure to get where they are today. The repetition of "the streaks survive, in the night" could represent the idea that even though times are hard, there is still a glimmer of hope or possibility for change.

Overall, Walls appears to be a poignant and introspective song that explores the emotions and struggles of someone going through difficult times in their life.
