All This Night
St. Olaf Orchestra And Choirs Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The day is my enemy, the night my friend,
For I'm always so alone
Till the day draws to an end.
But when the sun goes down
And the moon comes through,
To the monotone of the evening's drone
I'm all alone with you.
All through the night,
I delight in your love,
All through the night, you're so close to me.
All through the night, from a height far above,
You and your love brings me ecstasy.

When dawn comes to waken me
You're never there at all.
I know you've forsaken me,
Till the shadows fall.
But then once again
I can dream,
I've the right

To be close to you
All through the night.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of St. Olaf Orchestra and Choirs' "All This Night" speak of a person who feels lonely during the day but finds solace in the night. The singer feels a strong connection with an unknown person during the nighttime, feeling that they are not alone anymore. They cherish the moments spent together under the moon's light, forgetting about all the loneliness and pain that they have felt throughout the day. The singer expresses how being with this person brings them ecstasy and joy that seems never-ending. However, when the sun rises, the person is gone, leaving the singer alone once again.

The song is about the universal human drive to seek companionship and find comfort in the presence of others, especially during hard times. The lyrics also represent the idea of being vulnerable with somebody special, letting go of all the worries that keep one awake at night. The last stanza of the song hints at the idea of holding onto hope and the dream of being close to this person again, despite the reality of being alone during the day.

In my opinion this is one of the best written Christian Christmas Songs. Not only are the words beautiful but they are written as a narrative about the birth of christ. I am no longer religious but I used to be very religious so I can still appreciate the beauty of it.

The first verses describe the state of the world prior to the birth of Christ. It is cold, lonlely and nearly hopeless. The flowers represent hope and the sunrise represents the birth of Jesus.
"Cold are the people winter of life, we tremble in shadows this cold endless night. Frozen in the snow lie roses sleeping, flowers that will echo the sunrise, fire of hope is our only warmth, weary its flame will be dying soon."

The second verse represents the visitation of the angels to the shepherds. The Voices in the distance are the abstract angels, the rumours of dawn are their message about jesus birth and the hope it will bring.
"Voice in the distance, call in the night. On wind you enfold us you speak of the light. Gentle on the eve, you whisper softly. Rumours of a dawn so embracing. Breathless love awaits, darkened souls, soon we will know of the morning"

Silent night is of course the birth of Jesus himself.

Now that Jesus is born the star which is a representation of the holy spirit shines in the sky bringing both sheperds and kings to see him. Its loneliness in the sky represents the humility and simplicity of the birth of Jesus and yet it is strong because the saviour is born. It doesnt matter if times are dark or bright that star still shines beckoning people towards it.

"spirit among us, shine like the sun, your light that guides shepherds and kings from a afar. Shimmer in the sky so empty, lonely, rising in the warmth of your sons love. Star unknowing of night and day, spirit we wait for your loving son"

lyrics:
Cold are the people, winter of life,
We tremble in shadows this cold endless night,
Frozen in the snow lie roses sleeping,
Flowers that will echo the sunrise,
Fire of hope is our only warmth,
Weary, it's flame will be dying soon.

Voice in the distance, call in the night,
On wind you enfold us You speak of the light,
Gentle on the ear you whisper softly,
Rumours of a dawn so embracing,
Breathless love awaits darkened souls,
Soon will we know of the morning.

Silent night, holy night,
All is calm, all is bright,
Round yon Virgin Mother and child,
Holy infant so tender and mild,
Sleep in heavenly peace,
Sleep in heavenly peace.

Spirit among us, shine like the star,
Your light that guides shepherds and kings from afar,
Shimmer in the sky so empty, lonely,
Rising in the warmth of your Son's love,
Star unknowing of night and day,
Spirit we wait for your loving Son.

Came from Bergen, Norway when I was nine with my parents. Landed in Chicago. Went to Lane Tech College Prep High, and even sang in their 400 member boys choir. But although I dearly wanted to go to St Olaf, it wasn't to be. We were immigrants with tight money, and the Vietnam war was looming. I served in Vietnam and later finished college in California. All turned out well. But to this day, I would have dearly loved to have attended St. Olaf. Just feels like it would have been an honor to my heritage.

Thank you for serving in our military. My husband was also in Vietnam. I'm grateful you are both here. I understand how you feel about not getting to attend St. Olaf. You claimed your education, which is so important, but I understand that the things we didn't get to do weigh on us always. Hope you can gain a few moments of belonging through videos like this. Bless you. 🌲🌲

Hi!
Despite coming from Vietnam myself, I'm so sorry your dream of St Olaf didn't come true. I'm currently a senior and I'm applying early (well today haha). If I get in, I'll make sure to be grateful for the opportunity. St Olaf is the best!

@dmurray2978

Thank you for serving in our military. Your sacrifice is so appreciated. It is an example of selflessness, following Christ's example, which this beautiful song portrays so well. God bless you!
