Nel 1980 esce la loro prima canzone Grande figlio di puttana e l'album d'esordio, Stadio, che contiene anche l'energica Chi Te L'ha Detto. Il 1983 vede l'uscita di uno dei brani che segnerà indelebilmente la loro carriera: Acqua E Sapone, per l'omonimo film di Carlo Verdone. Nel 1984 sono al Festival di Sanremo con Allo stadio. L'anno dopo esce uno dei loro più grandi successi Chiedi chi erano i Beatles. Nel 1986 a Sanremo cantano Canzoni alla radio. Nell'album omonimo che segue è inclusa Lunedì Cinema, sigla di apertura della serata dedicata ai grandi film proposti da Rai Uno.

Ricky Portera esce dal gruppo e nel 1987 il tastierista Beppe D'Onghia inizia a collaborare. Partecipano al progetto DallaMorandi. Nel frattempo Marco Nanni e Beppe D'Onghia lasciano il gruppo, rimangono Gaetano Curreri e Giovanni Pezzoli come componenti originari. Arriva la loro prima raccolta, Canzoni Alla Stadio, che contiene due inediti. Esce l'ultimo disco per la BMG, intitolato Puoi Fidarti Di Me (in seguito ristampato dalla EMI, con la quale gli Stadio hanno firmato un nuovo contratto). E un volume 2 di Canzoni Alla Stadio curato dalla BMG e non dalla band.

Nel 1991 esce Generazione di fenomeni sigla del telefilm di Raidue I Ragazzi del muretto e subito dopo l'album Siamo Tutti Elefanti Inventati. Seguono gli album Stabiliamo un contatto , StadioMobileLive con l'inedita Un Disperato Bisogno D'amore (pubblicata anche in versione remix per le discoteche sulle base strumentale di U Got 2 Let The Music dei Cappella) e Di Volpi, Di Vizi e Di Virtù (che include Ballando Al Buio, uno dei loro maggiori successi) e Dammi 5 Minuti.

Dopo una pausa di un paio d'anni, torneranno nel 1999 con la raccolta Ballate Fra Il Cielo e Il Mare. Parteciperanno al Festival di Sanremo con il brano Lo Zaino, non riscuotendo però un ricco successo di critica. Si rifaranno con il gradimento del pubblico.

Nel 2002 arriva un album che da nuovo slancio alla carriera della band, dopo la pausa di riflessione del precedente disco, raccolta di ballate. Esce infatti Occhi Negli Occhi, anticipato dall'intenso singolo Sorprendimi.

Curreri, amico intimo di Vasco Rossi (buona parte di Buoni o cattivi, album di Vasco Rossi, è scritto a sei mani proprio da Vasco, Curreri e Saverio Grandi) rimane, durante una tappa della tournée nel 2003, vittima di un ictus. Per sua fortuna, un medico presente in platea gli salverà la vita.

Con l'uscita nel 2005 dell'album L'amore volubile, gli Stadio tornano con un album che sembra percorrere diverse traiettorie dal Pop-Rock d'autore d'origine del gruppo. All'origine di questo diverso percorso figura Saverio Grandi autore e produttore dell'album. Nel 2007 scrivono "e mi alzo sui pedali" per la produzione Rai "Marco Pantani", contenuta nel nuovo cd "Parole nel vento" che esce subito dopo la partecipazione a Sanremo con la canzone "Guardami"
