War Paint
Stalking Gia Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You want to bottle me up, lock away my heart and soul.
You came searching for a rock, that you could build your home upon.
But I'm a rolling stone, I'm a rolling stone.
And what you need the most, what you need the most, is what I have the least.
Lock and load, I've seen a lot but still, too young to feel old.
I've got my scars to show.
Won't give into the thrill I'm standing on my own.
I can't just give it all up for you.
Just when I'm about to cross the finish line.
300 years it took, to make the climb now it's my time!
But I'ma rolling stone, I'ma rolling stone.
And what you need the most, what you need the most, is what I have the least.
Lock and load, I've seen a lot but still, too young to feel old.
I've got my scars to show.
Won't give into the thrill I'm standing on my own.
No love, no pain.
War paint, beneath my eyes, beneath my eyes.
No love, no pain, war paint.
beneath my eyes.
I have a lot of fight in me, fight in me, you will be the death of me.
I have a lot of fight me.
oh...
LOCK AND LOAD!
lock and load.
I've seen a lot but still, too young to feel old.
I've got my scars to show.
Won't give into the thrill I'm standing on my own.
No love, no pain.
War paint, beneath my eyes, beneath my eyes.

No love, no pain, war paint.
beneath my eyes.

Overall Meaning

In Stalking Gia's song "War Paint," the singer is expressing her resistance to being constrained and owned by another person. She claims that whoever she is with wants to "bottle her up" and restrict her freedom. They want to build a home on a rock, but she is a "rolling stone" who cannot be tied down. The person she is with needs what she has the least – independence and freedom. The singer has scars that she's not afraid to show, and she won't give in to the desire for love and thrill that the other person seems to want. She is determined to stand on her own and fight for her individuality.

The chorus "no love, no pain, war paint beneath my eyes" is a metaphor for the struggles she has gone through and wears them as war paint, a reminder of her resilience. Even though she has a lot of fight in her, she admits that this person may be the death of her. The singer's tone is one of defiance, strength and confidence in herself. She is not willing to give up who she is for someone else and is willing to fight for her individuality.

I'm kinda fucked up about the Soft Glas remix of this song just being erased from existence. It was one of my favorites and the way "I've got a lot of fight in me / You won't be the death of me" got rendered caused a very specific emotion.
And it's just gone!
