Angel Eyes
Stan Kenton and June Christy Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Still it's uncomfortably near
My own heart ain't gainin' no ground
Because my Angel Eyes ain't here
Angel Eyes that old devil sent
They glow unbearably bright
Need I say that my love's mis-spent
So drink up, drink up all you people
And order anything you see
Have fun you happy people
The drink, and the laugh's, on me
Pardon me, but I gotta run
The fact's uncommonly clear
I gotta find who's now number one
And why my Angel Eyes ain't here.
I gotta find who's now the number one
And why my Angel Eyes ain't here.
'Scuse me while I disappear.
The song Angel Eyes by Stan Kenton and June Christy is a melancholic and introspective piece about lost love. The singer is trying to convince himself that love is not present anymore, but he can still feel its presence. He is longing for his lost love which is represented by the metaphor of "Angel Eyes". The line, "My own heart ain't gainin' no ground" expresses his inability to move on and find happiness without his loved one.
The chorus further emphasizes the depth of his feelings for this person. He describes the eyes of his lover as an "old devil sent" which are so bright and alluring that they cause him to lose his way. He acknowledges that his love has been "mis-spent" but he still cannot help himself from being drawn to this person.
The last verse is a call to action as the singer realizes that he has to move on and find someone who can fill the void in his life. He decides to go out and seek the person who has taken his lover's place and try to understand why his Angel Eyes are not with him anymore. The final line, " 'Scuse me while I disappear" conveys a sense of defeat and sadness as he tries to come to terms with his lost love.

I've always loved this old Matt Dennis chestnut. June did this version earlier in her career; then again on what was to be her last album, "Impromptu." The latter very slower, more wistful, with typical impeccable Christy phrasing.

It's so odd, really. I was just a kid when she and Kenton were performing together. Somehow, though, I surely do miss both of them.

once again; this is a great duet; both brought the song to life. she was the greatest, no matter what she sang. prof sam hamod, phd (poet and former jazz musician from the 50s and 60s)

June made her bones with Kenton and married Coop until the very end! Man if that ain't love! ;-)

Miss Christy's phrasing is gorgeous as always, but the tune suffers from the bad piano accompaniment. Kenton plays rather insensitive to the singer, he rushes ahead of the rhythm most of the time, uses just too many senseless, pompous chords... June Christy herself criticized this album heavily later.
