Autumn Leaves
Stanley Jordan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The falling leaves drift by the window
The autumn leaves of red and gold
I see your lips, the summer kisses
The sun-burned hands I used to hold

Since you went away the days grow long
And soon I'll hear old winter's song
But I miss you most of all my darling
When autumn leaves start to fall

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Stanley Jordan's song Autumn Leaves paint a picture of lost love and the passing of time. The falling leaves drifting by the window are a metaphor for the transience of life and the inevitability of change. The autumn leaves in all their red and gold beauty represent the beauty that was once there with the lost love. The memories of the summer kisses and sun-burned hands that the singer used to hold become bittersweet as they realize that they will never experience those moments again.

The loneliness that follows the departure of the loved one is palpable in the lyrics. The days grow long and the winter's song is on the horizon. The singer longs for their darling the most when the autumn leaves start to fall as a reminder of the memories they shared. The lyrics switch to French halfway through, with the first stanza being translated to "This is a song that resembles us / You loved me and I loved you / We lived together, both of us / You loved me, I loved you / But life separates those who love / Gently, without making a sound / And the sea erases on the sand the steps of the lovers who part."

The French lyrics add an international flavor to the song and provide a touch of elegance and refinement. The words, when translated, speak to the universal experience of lost love and how it can impact our lives. The song's melancholic tone and poetic imagery make it a timeless classic.

My thought about the dislikes are that if you have the knowledge of music to find Stanley Jordan how do you dislike this??

The Nutty Squirrel

Maybe they’re disliking the shoulder pads?

So here's the thing. Being honest. If I was to just hear this without seeing it, I would probably think, wow he's pretty good but some of his note articulations are a little clumsy, and he kind of overplays a little. But seeing it and knowing he's also playing the rhythm guitar it's unbelievable. So it sort of depends on how much the spectacle of seeing superhuman feats of musicianship matter to you.

Jon Kines

Sheer idiocy there can be no other explanation, most especially if the incomparable Charnett Moffett is accompanying on bass! 💯❤🥂

pretorious700

A lot of people can't understand what he's doing and how difficult it is.

@MegaVIDEOPOWER MegaVIDEOPOWER I haven't seen nobody doing better this style than him, and I know a couple of extraordinaire guitarists

First time I heard this (which was also the first time I heard of Stanley Jordan), he dislodged all my favourite guitarists; and all my other favourite versions of this tune took a caning as well. I was high on this track for weeks, and every time I hear it now it does the same. The trio is awesome, the bass player is a demon.

Nathan Jasper

If it was anyone else on guitar the bass player would be the star and everything the comment section was talking about.

I've been listening to Stanley for years. I'm a guitarist, but his rendition of Over The Rainbow makes me cry every time I hear it. 😪🙏

Nobody's talking about that drummer. He is exactly on point. Perfect jazz grooving.
