Losing It
State of Being Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
In from the future, an alien place
She said, "sit down, and tell me about tomorrow..."
My dirty shoes, my circuit face
My memory wouldn't leave one trace
Synthetic lore - technology holds the sorrow
My hands are all dirty from a polymer war
It's the excuse that I use - the antennea was loose
And now I'm suffering from radiation blues
So let's cut through it
Before we lose it again
Cut through it
Before we lose it again
I just got back, there are things to face
The loyalties have all been replaced
The bottom dollar - the cutting is hard to swallow
The civilized, the civil eyed
A struggle in the empire that died
But what remains is not too hard to follow
They choked it all with their very own hands
By making the same old selfish demands
My fighting it fails, betrayed by wealth
Because I cannot save the world if I can't save myself
So let's cut through it
Before we lose it again
Cut through it
Before we lose it again
State of Being's song Losing It depicts a future world where technology controls and rules everything. In the first verse, the singer comes back from the future - an alien place - and meets someone who asks him about what tomorrow holds. He has a synthetic face and dirty shoes, indicating the result of some sort of struggle, perhaps a polymer war. The singer's memory fails him because of the synthetic technology. He has lost pieces of himself in the war and is now suffering from radiation blues. It's an excuse he uses to cover up his emotional vulnerabilities.
In the second verse, the singer is back in the present, facing reality after being swept up in a utopian future where technology provided solutions to all problems. He says that loyalties have been replaced and technology has choked everyone with their own hands by making the same old selfish demands. He feels he is failing in his fight against this world because he cannot even save himself. The chorus repeats the idea of cutting through it before losing oneself again.
The song portrays a dystopian future in which greed and selfishness lead to the destruction of the world. The singer can't save the world because he's struggling to save himself first. The song encourages us to be more conscious of our actions and not let technology or greed consume us.
