Black Friday
Steely Dan/Steely Dan/Steely Dan/Steely Dan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When Black Friday comes
I stand down by the door
And catch the grey men when they
Dive from the fourteenth floor

When Black Friday comes
I collect everything I'm owed
And before my friends find out
I'll be on the road

When Black Friday falls you know it's got to be
Don't let it fall on me

When Black Friday comes
I fly down to Muswellbrook
Gonna strike all the big red words
From my little black book

Gonna do just what I please
Gonna wear no socks and shoes
With nothing to do but feed
All the kangaroos

When Black Friday comes I'll be on that hill
You know I will

When Black Friday comes
I'm gonna dig myself a hole
Gonna lay down in it 'til
I satisfy my soul

Gonna let the world pass by me
The Archbishop's gonna sanctify me
And if he don't come across
I'm gonna let it roll

When Black Friday comes

I'm gonna stake my claim
I guess I'll change my name

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Black Friday" by Steely Dan are a reflection on greed and materialism. The song is essentially about a man who is comparing himself to others who are caught up in the frenzy of Black Friday, a day known for being the busiest shopping day of the year. The singer seems to be aware of how superficial this day is and wants to distance himself from it.

The opening lines of the song, "When Black Friday comes / I stand down by the door / And catch the grey men when they / Dive from the fourteenth floor" suggest that he is watching as people flock to the stores to buy things they don't need, even if they can't afford them. He is an observer to this madness, but he chooses not to partake in it.

In the second verse, the singer talks about "collecting everything he's owed" before his friends find out so that he can be "on the road." This suggests that he is someone who has debts to pay, but he wants to get out of town before anyone knows about it. He is aware that his friends might judge him for his financial troubles, and he wants to avoid that confrontation.

The rest of the song continues with the theme of wanting to distance oneself from the materialistic world. The singer talks about going to Australia and "striking all the big red words / From [his] little black book." He wants to start fresh and be free from the pressures of society. He talks about feeding kangaroos and wearing no shoes or socks, which suggests that he wants to be grounded and connected to nature.

Overall, "Black Friday" is a song about rebellion against consumerism and materialism. The singer wants to strip away all of the superficial things in life and find something real and meaningful.

I wasn't born until 12 years after this song was recorded. But I've been damn glad since the day I found it and make sure my kids are well versed on the gospel of Steely Dan.

@@KimF1 I know Kim, and all the others prior.
The only president that payed off the national Dept was Andrew Jackson. There was a federal reserve in his day, just a different name. He saw their evil wicked intensions. Fortunately, they only had a 20 year charter, and when it came up renewal, Jackson made sure our Dept to them world control bastards was payed off, then he would not renew their charter.
So American money was our money.
Not long after the bastards came back again under a different name, and the Dems of that time voted for another fed Reserve. Look at us now.
They control the world and her governments.
