How Things Change

We held the time in our hands
And it's so hard to let 'em all go
The promises we'll never keep
The things we bought that we won't need
Tomorrow's new
And I will never know
Yeah they do
Cause I thought that I'd always love you
And I know nothing stays the same
Yeah things change always will
You can't tell your heart how to feel
And I thought you would still be here today
But things change
I was sure and so were you
We were too strong to break in two
But here we are a thousand miles apart
Wonderin' why it has to be this way
It's not your fault
No one's to blame
What we don't feel
It's just the way we are
Things change
Yeah they do
Cause I thought that I'd always love you
And I know nothing stays the same
Yeah things change always will
You can't tell your heart how to feel
And I thought you would still be here today
But things change
Nothing's set in stone
Things will come and they will go
And that's just the way
Just the way it is
Things change
Yeah they do
Cause I thought that I'd always love you
And I know nothing stays the same
Yeah things change always will
You can't tell your heart how to feel
And I thought you would still be here today
But things change
In Stefanie Heinzmann's song "How Things Change," she reflects on lost love and the inevitable changes that come with time. The lyrics express the sadness and confusion that come with the end of a relationship, as the singer looks back on all the plans and promises that were made and wonders how things could have gone differently. As the chorus repeats, "Things change, yeah they do / 'Cause I thought that I'd always love you," the singer acknowledges that even though they never wanted to let go, the relationship has come to an end and they must move on.
Through the repetition of the phrase "things change," the song emphasizes the inevitability of change in life and relationships. Despite the best intentions and efforts of both people involved, sometimes things just don't work out. The singer acknowledges that "you can't tell your heart how to feel," even if they had hoped for a different outcome.
Overall, "How Things Change" is a poignant and relatable reflection on the complexities of love, loss, and the passage of time. The song captures the bittersweet emotions that come with the end of a relationship and the realization that even though things didn't work out, life will continue to change and evolve.
