When I think of home
I think of a resting place
A place where there's peace, quiet, and serenity
And that's where some of my friends have gone
Friends who have traveled with me through my wonderful experience in Oz
A journey I'll never forget

When I think of home, I think of a place
where's there's love overflowing
I wish I was home, I wish I was back there
With the things I've been knowing

Wind that makes the tall grass bend into leaning
Suddenly the raindrops that fall they have a meaning
Sprinklin' the scene
Makes it all clean

(When I think of home)
Maybe there's a chance for me to go back
Now that I have some direction
(Maybe there's a chance I'll get home)
It sure would be nice to be back at home
Where there's love and affection

And just maybe I can convince time to slow up
Givin' me enough time, ooh, in my life to grow up
Time be my friend
And let me start again

Suddenly my world's gone and change it's fate
And I still know where I'm going
I have had my mind spun round in space
And watched it growing

And oh, if you're listening, God, please don't make it hard
To know if we should believe the things that we see
Tell us should we try and stay or should we run away (should we run away)
Or will it be better just to let things, let them be, oh

Livin' here in this brand new world
Might be a fantasy
But it's taught me to love, oh, yeah
And it's real, it's so real, it's real to me

And I've learned that we must look
Inside our hearts to find
A world full of love
Like yours, like mine

Like home
Like, like home
(When I think of home)
My friends smilin' down on me
Givin' me their energy, oh
(When I think of home)
I think of a peaceful world and joy
All around me, yeah
(When I think of home)
And love that we share can never
Never, ever be taken away from me, yeah, yeah, yeah
(When I think of home)
I just sit down and think
And gets on down in my bone, bone, yeah
(When I think of home)
I can hear my friends tellin' me
Stephanie, please sing my song

I want to sing, I want to shout
I want to tell you what its all about

Overall Meaning

Stephanie Mills's song Home from the musical The Wiz is a powerful ballad about longing for a place of peace, love, and serenity. It begins as a reminiscence of Oz and the friends who accompanied the singer on her journey. The lyrics indicate that this place called home is an emotional resting place where there is no drama or chaos. It is a place of calm and stability.

The song explores the feeling of displacement, of not belonging to a physical location. The singer wants to be back home again, and she wants to grow, to start again, to find direction. She is yearning for a place where she can be herself and flourish. It is not necessarily a particular place, but a state of being. The lyrics are emotive, and the music matches the intensity of the words, building slowly to a powerful climax.

Overall the song Home is about the journey of self-discovery and finding a place in the world where we can find solace, love and be ourselves. It captures the human condition and the struggles we all face in life.

Wind that makes the tall grass bend into leaning
The wind is an unstoppable force of nature, and when it blows and the grass moves, it's a metaphor for how the world is constantly changing, and no matter what, life goes on.

Suddenly the raindrops that fall they have a meaning
Sometimes, significant events or changes happen in life, which make previous events seem irrelevant. With a new perspective, even small things like raindrops, may now have a more profound meaning.

Suddenly my world's gone and change it's fate
Life can change unexpectedly, shifting the course of our plans and the way we look at the world around us. Being in moments of tranquility, we can learn to let these changes roll over us without undo distress.

And I still know where I'm going
Having a clear sense of purpose and direction can serve as a guide for when things feel uncertain, even when we're in unfamiliar territory.

I have had my mind spun round in space
The metaphor of space suggests an expansive environment beyond anyone's control; corresponding thoughts show a sense of limbo, where decisions seem out of one's power.

And watched it growing
Being enveloped in vast, open space can be both intimidating and freeing. It's in moments of grandiosity that we comprehend the scope of the situation and our place in it.

And oh, if you're listening, God, please don't make it hard
The opening of this entreaty knowing the great magnitude of being heard by a deity is a personification of the helplessness of the situation, the need to appeal to a higher power when one is at their most vulnerable.

To know if we should believe the things that we see
When high levels of uncertainty and confusion reign, it can be challenging to decipher the world around us, requiring faith and a willingness to believe in events and people that are at odds with our preconceptions.

Tell us should we try and stay or should we run away (should we run away)
Getting clarity in dire situations requires knowing which moves to make and when to make them. People would require insight and guidance to make the most challenging of calls.

Or will it be better just to let things, let them be, oh
Being in a relaxing environment like home, where the setting is under our control, can make it much easier to recognize that sometimes the best thing to do is to leave things in their natural state and allow events to unfold without interference.

Livin' here in this brand new world
The idea of a new world represents the fresh opportunities and contexts for growth that one encounters when venturing into unfamiliar territories.

Might be a fantasy
The high levels of uncertainty surrounding new beginnings and new environments can render the hypothetical outcome a concept, fantasies mired in an unreachable reality.

But it's taught me to love, oh, yeah
Opening ourselves up to new experiences and challenges provides us with opportunities to both love and be loved, offering a new perspective that enhances our lives.

And it's real, it's so real, it's real to me
Even in a fantasy, when we truly invest in and believe in ourselves and the possibilities at hand, the experience can feel absolutely real and alive.

And I've learned that we must look
In order to learn new lessons and gain new insights, we must make the effort to look and seek out opportunities for growth and newness.

Inside our hearts to find
The biggest answers and connections we can make in life are those that require us to look within ourselves and draw on our inner strengths, resources and values.

A world full of love
In order to experience and create a world full of love riches, we must foster compassion and care for ourselves and others, welcoming others into our own worlds.

Like yours, like mine
Despite differences in backgrounds, cultres or ways of life, one common element to all people is the need to feel a sense of love and belonging. Home brings many people's worlds together in one place, creating common ground.

My friends smilin' down on me
Even when our loved ones are no longer with us, we may still feel their effects on our lives, seeing their impact in our memories, and feeling loyalty to those from whom we've grown apart.

Givin' me their energy, oh
They may be gone but not their love and their spirit that they have shared with us. Though physically absent, their supporting spirit provides us with hope, strength and an unending supply of love and encouragement.

And love that we share can never
The bonds, experiences and memories that the people who matter to us or that have been vital parts of our lives can never be taken away, they are etched deeply in our hearts and will remain there forever.

Never, ever be taken away from me, yeah, yeah, yeah
Tied up with love are the cherished connections that are irreplaceable and palpable; forever there as a source of joy and warmth.

I just sit down and think
As we go about life, our memories enriching us from within, it's worth taking some time regularly to reflect and think about the ways and reasons behind our actions and our way of life.

And gets on down in my bone, bone, yeah
The awareness of the significance of our attachment to home and our experiences at large sets deep in our being, informing and affecting our actions and decisions regularly.

I can hear my friends tellin' me
Embedded deep in our hearts and minds, are the echoes and remnants of experiences that shape our worldviews and paths.

Stephanie, please sing my song
Certain experiences and memories are so ineffable that we can only express them through art and the use of beauty to represent the evocative essence of the feeling.

I want to sing, I want to shout
When our experiences are imbued with moments of exceeding depth and brightness, they can't remain silent, so they must spill forth in song, marked by the call of the depths of the soul to remember and cherish the things that matter.

I want to tell you what its all about
These moments are captured in storytelling and other forms of artistic media that can be used to connect people through powerful and impactful sharing of experiences; all art is the culmination of such powerful moments.

Suddenly the snowflakes that fall have a meaning
Sprinklin' the scene, makes it all clean

Diane Ross had to GET HERS!! She and Goldie Hawn are the ONLY woman Executive Producers with big hits in the 1970s.

Diane had a vision and she kicked ass. Wouldn’t have been no Michael Jackson or Nipsy Russell in The Wiz if she hadn’t of helmed it. It would have been good but not the epically great feature that is.

Diana knows she don’t sing like Stephanie. Not every black woman with a song to share can holla SANG.

And not every singer has such an intense vision for their career.

Respect!

...

I saw this on Broadway and I shall NEVER forget it.  No one, and I mean NO ONE, can sing this song like the great Stephanie Mills. A tiny girl of just sixteen, she OWNED that stage!

Bren Hart

You are ABSOLUTELY correct!!! I was so fortunate to be there in the front row about age 14 with goose bumps all over my arms in amazement. I thought then as I do now...that Stephanie Mills had the greatest voice I've ever heard. Just perfection. I get emotional still hearing "her" sing it no matter how many times I hear it. NO ONE compares or even comes close ! 💜
