It's said that the musical urge in Kellogg started with a mixture of his dad's records (Cat Stevens/Jim Croce) and his sister's (Mötley Crüe/Bon Jovi). The songwriting of the former and the showmanship of the latter was the beginning of the musical attitude that pervades Kellogg's work today. Kellogg got his start recording and touring while attending the University of Massachusetts Amherst from 1994-1998. He independently released several solo albums before being signed to Universal Records in 2004.

Learn to Live
Stephen Kellogg Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
No one here would be denying
There's been sadness, there's been pain
Things will never be the same
There's a choice you must be making
And its simple if you try
You can learn to live with the pain you feel
No matter what anyone says
There will come a day for joy
Fear will be a welcomed friend
'Cause when you're fearless, it's the end
There's a choice you must be making
And its simple if you try
You can learn to live with the fear you feel
Or you can learn to die
But hold on
Hold on
When the hope feels like a fabric that is ugly, torn and frayed
Hold on, hold on
'Cause the healing's in the mending and you'll wish that you had stayed
There's a choice you must be making
And you must make it everyday
You can learn to face the mistakes you've made
Or you can look the other way
Learn to die with the things you did
Or you can learn to live
You can learn to live
You can learn to live
In "Learn to Live" by Stephen Kellogg, the lyrics explore the theme of resilience and finding the strength to overcome pain and fear. The song acknowledges the presence of sadness and pain in life but emphasizes that things do not have to stay that way. It presents the listener with a choice: to either learn to live with the pain and fear they feel or to succumb to it and learn to die.
The verses suggest that learning to live with pain and fear requires making a conscious decision to face and confront these emotions. It emphasizes the simplicity of this choice, encouraging the listener to try and make the effort. The lyrics suggest that living with pain may not always be easy, but it is a preferable option to giving in to despair and succumbing to fear. The song acknowledges that fear can seem like a protective force, but ultimately, it is not sustainable. Being fearless leads to a dead end, while living with fear can be a stepping stone towards healing and growth.
The chorus provides a message of hope and encourages the listener to hold on, even when things seem difficult. It illustrates the idea that healing and restoration will come in time, and staying steadfast during challenging times is worth it. The song's lyrics assert that making the choice to face and learn from mistakes is crucial for personal growth, rather than avoiding them.
Overall, "Learn to Live" is an uplifting and empowering song that advocates for resilience, embracing difficult emotions, and finding the strength to move forward in life.
