We Say Goodbye
Stephen Kellogg Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Everything goes slowly but the things that go by fast
Everything you think will stay is never gonna last
Everything that starts out right eventually goes south
There were times I know it now, I should have shut my mouth

If you want to go then go
If you want to stay then stay
There's nothing I can do to get through to you
When you're treating me this way
So tell me if
This is where
We say goodbye
I hope that we can give it one more try
I know that I can be a better guy this time
Or maybe that's a lie

So ease up on the gas now boy
Before she gets away
Sometimes you can chase a thing
Right out of your own way
I just say

If you want to go then go
If you want to stay then stay
There's nothing I can do to get through to you
When you're treating me this way
So tell me if
This is where
We say goodbye
I hope that we can give it one more try
I know that I can be a better guy this time
Or maybe that's a lie
But it's one that I live by

I'd rather be a bleeding heart
Than a heartless bastard

But if you want to go then go
If you want to stay then stay
Don't say the end
Has come again

Cause I never want to say goodbye
I hope that we could give it one more try
I swear I'm gonna be a better guy this time
Or maybe that's a lie
But it's one that I live by

I never want to say goodbye
I know that we should give it one more try
I swear I'm gonna be a better guy this time

Or maybe that's a lie
But it's one that I live by

Overall Meaning

The song "We Say Goodbye" by Stephen Kellogg laments the end of a relationship that had been hoped to last forever, but has instead met its end. The first stanza of the song speaks to the fleeting nature of relationships and how quickly they can change. It poses the irony that the things that we expect to stay permanently in our lives are the things that disappear the quickest. He acknowledges that even good relationships do go wrong at times, and it's our duty to make things right or come to an agreement about how to proceed.

The chorus is a plea to his partner to make a decision, to stay or to go, instead of keeping him in the constant limbo of mixed feelings. The singer demands to be given a choice as to whether they should prolong the relationship with another chance or call it quits for good. The line "So tell me if / This is where / We say goodbye" is a clear indication that he wants a proper answer in order to move on. In the following lines, he tries to convince his partner that they should pursue the relationship and give it one more chance because he knows he can be a better partner this time around or confesses that it might be a lie, but it’s a lie he believes in enough.

Finally, the outro assures the listener that he would prefer to have a broken heart than no heart at all. Ultimately, Kellogg sings that he wants to give the relationship another try, rather than saying goodbye for good. There is a sense of hope and powerlessness at the same time as the musician has done everything in his power to keep the relationship going, including changing himself, but he still does not have the final decision.
