Run To The Hills
Steve ´n´ Seagulls Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

White man came across the sea
He brought us pain and misery
He killed our tribes, he killed our creed
He took our game for his own need

We fought him hard we fought him well
Out on the plains we gave him hell
But many came too much for Cree
Oh will we ever be set free?

Riding through dust clouds and barren wastes
Galloping hard on the plains
Chasing the redskins back to their holes
Fighting them at their own game
Murder for freedom′s a stab in the back
Women and children the cowards attack

Run to the hills, run for your lives
Run to the hills, run for your lives

Soldier blue in the barren wastes
Hunting and killing's a game
Raping the women and wasting the men
The only good Indians are tame
Selling them whiskey and taking their gold
Enslaving the young and destroying the old

Run to the hills,
Run for your lives.
Run to the hills,
Run for your lives.

Yeah oh ah!

Run to the hills,
Run for your lives.
Run to the hills,
Run for your lives.

Run to the hills,
Run for your lives.

Run to the hills,
Run for your lives.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Steve 'n' Seagulls's song Run To The Hills are illustrating the conflict between Native Americans and white colonizers in North America. The song tells the story of how white men came across the sea and brought pain and misery to the Native American tribes. They killed their people, stole their resources and enslaved their young. The Native Americans fought back bravely but ultimately they were overwhelmed by the sheer number of white colonizers. The lyrics ask the question of whether they will ever be set free.

The second verse depicts the brutal tactics used by the white colonizers to subjugate the Native Americans. They chased them down, killed them, raped their women and took their gold. The chorus then implores the listener to run to the hills and save themselves from the violence perpetrated by the white men.

The lyrics of the song are an indictment of the inhumane treatment of Native Americans during colonization. The song is a poignant reminder of the atrocities committed during that time in history and a call to action to remember them. It is also a warning against systemic racism that still exists towards indigenous people in many parts of the world.

@@elricofmelnibone8256 And the simple fact is the Nazis lost because they were weak. Outmatched. Inferior strength.
If they were stronger, they could have won the war.
But they didn't.
Just as the Aztecs were weak to fight off Cortez.
Just as the Greeks could not stop the Persians from ravaging Athens.
Just as the original natives of Ireland could not stop the Viking invaders.

The strong conquers the weak.
That is nature.

That's how it's always been.
And whether you like it or not,
That's how it will always be.

If you can't defend your culture or dominion from others by use of force, then your "cultural superiority" means nothing.
