The One I Love Belongs To Somebody Else
Steve Allen Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And all my daydreams have gone astray
I think about the one and only
Who's bound to find me some golden day
The one I love is coming along some day
And I'll have none except the one I love
He/She may be near or ever so far away
And though our meeting is left to chance
Until our meeting
I still will have my dream romance
And through the night I pray to the moon above
To please be kind and find the one I love
The lyrics to Steve Allen's song The One I love Belongs To Somebody Else speak of the longing and loneliness one feels when they are not with the person they love. The first stanza acknowledges the dreariness of life without the one you love, and how all your hopes and desires seem to have gone awry. It then goes on to say that there is only one person that can fill that void, and that they will come to you someday. This optimism is reinforced in the following stanza, where the singer reiterates that they will not settle for anyone else but the one they love, even though they may be far away.
The bridge of the song speaks about the uncertainty that comes with finding love. The meeting with the one you love is left to chance, and until that happens, the singer will continue to dream about their perfect romance. The final stanza has the singer calling out to the moon, asking for its help in finding the one they love. This is a poignant moment, as it emphasizes the desolation of the singer's current situation, and their hope that things will change.
Overall, the lyrics to The One I love Belongs To Somebody Else are a touching ode to love and the longing that comes with it. The song speaks to anyone who has ever been separated from their loved one, and the hope they hold that they will be reunited someday.
