Forbert signed a recording contract with Nemperor in 1978, and they released his debut album, Alive on Arrival, that same year. His song "Romeo's Tune", although "dedicated to the memory of Florence Ballard" on the sleeve of Forbert's second album Jackrabbit Slim (released in 1979), is not about Supremes singer Ballard who died in 1976. "Forbert admits that Ballard became a timely connection for "Romeo's Tune", written about a girl from Meridian. "That seemed like such bad news to me and such sad news. She wasn't really taken care of by the music business, which is not a new story". At around this time critics hailed Forbert as "The new Bob Dylan" because of a similar vocal timbre and thoughtful songwriting. The front cover of Jackrabbit Slim encourages such comparisons with its simplicity: a black and white photo of Steve Forbert playing a well-worn Martin acoustic guitar with a capo on it, his shirt tinted green. The record was recorded in Nashville and produced by John Simon who had worked with The Band.
After many successful years, Forbert sought out new inspiration and found it when he relocated to Nashville in 1985. Forbert's tribute to Jimmie Rodgers, Any Old Time, was nominated for a 2004 Grammy in the best traditional folk category. In 2006, he was inducted into the Mississippi Music Hall of Fame.
Recent albums include Strange Names & New Sensations (2007), The Place And The Time (2009), and Over With You (2012).

Breaking Through
Steve Forbert Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Will they ever not short sell me?
I'm trusting you,
You're trusting, too.
Hear me, hear me,
Just as long as you're here near me,
Fears fade from view,
Seems like, seems like,
Tender moments make things dreamlike,
I find it's true
Each time with you.
I've never talked like this before,
My future's been so blue,
I'm knocking now on love's front door,
I'm breaking through with you.
Good things, good things,
Need not ever know what bad means,
I'll swear with you
And I'll be true
Always, always,
Things that matter matter always,
Always with you,
I find I do.
I've never talked like this before,
My future's been so dark,
I'm knocking now on love's front door,
You've shown me how to start.
Tell me, tell me,
Worlds of wonder still might well be,
I'm trusting you,
You're trusting, too,
We're breaking through,
We're breaking through,
We're breaking through.
The lyrics of Steve Forbert's song Breaking Through convey a deep sense of trust, hope and the possibility of finding love. The central theme of the song is the idea of breaking through barriers that have kept the singer from experiencing true happiness in life and love. The opening lines "Tell me, tell me, will they ever not short sell me?" suggest the singer's feeling of distrust and insecurity about the world, but then, he quickly turns to his loved one, saying "I'm trusting you, You're trusting, too".
The sentiments in the rest of the song, including "Fears fade from view, we're breaking through" and "I'm knocking now on love's front door, I'm breaking through with you" emphasize the singer's newfound hope and determination to pursue love and happiness, with his partner by his side. The singer's optimistic perspective is conveyed through lines such as "Good things, good things, need not ever know what bad means" and "Worlds of wonder still might well be". The relationship between the singer and his partner is clearly defined as one built on trust, hope, and a deep sense of commitment to each other, as they break through the barriers that have kept them apart.
In conclusion, this beautiful song is about overcoming barriers and having the determination and trust to pursue true happiness. It conveys the idea that no matter how difficult the journey may be, with a positive attitude and a loving partner by your side, you can break through and find true happiness.
