Kudos to Steve Martin for reviving the fine old musical form of the Lament. I think the proper title of this piece is "Lament for Nancy Short". A moving tribute.

Absolutely gorgeous. The music tells a story of heartbreak or loss, in my eyes. It reminds me of an old style called a lament...a grieving piece. You play it in fourths, and fill with whatever inspires the story. Steve Martin is the real deal here, he really is.

Ronald60202 I've always enjoyed him as a comic and actor. But he is a great musician in his own right. He's earned it over decades. Beautiful.

My mother's name is Nancy. She was obsessed with Steve Martin to the point that I grew up with framed photos of him with his cat and banjo on the walls. She died in 1997 when I was a kid. I found this song recently and was thunderstruck. He didn't know my mother, but this feels and sounds like a song dedicated to her. Thank you for the most healing, cathartic, beautiful song Steve Martin 💖

My father got me this album, now he's passed on.. It's said we live on in the people whose lives we touch, he lives on in all the friends he made along the way. the part of me that left with him is is Happy knowing he's not in pain, nor is he alone safe in the knowledge he's in the best of hands. The part of me that's here very much misses the part of him that's left, and will always do so whenever I'm reminded of him. I pray I see him again seeing him smirk getting a big hug and finally knowing things truly are okay. Until that day I'll carry his memory with me. Steve this lament may have been for Nancy but it works for my father too. Rest in peace George David Carter. I'll see you again some day.

This tune is so beautiful to me it put a lump in my throat before I even knew it was a tribute. Just transcendent.
