Towson embarked on a solo career in 2001 after the breakup of his previous bands, Penfold (formed during high school years in Toowoomba) and The Defectives. Initially surprising audiences with his unorthodox solo electric style, Towson rapidly established a reputation on his passionate live shows, mixing music and politics in scathing or humorous attacks on injustice and inequality.
His one man, one guitar approach allowed him to play ‘anywhere, anytime’ – which he did with prolific intensity. He put this motto into practice in 2003 when there was no single national support announced for Billy Bragg’s Australian tour. Steve decided to do the supports anyway – playing outside the venues! Performing at each of the eight shows, Steve won over Bragg fans from Byron to Perth, and ended the tour discussing politics and life on the road with the man himself.
In addition to taking his music to audiences within the relatively safe political climate of Australia, Towson has toured throughout South-East Asia six times. Despite the tight or turbulent political atmosphere in some countries, Towson has been unwavering in his advocacy for equality and social change.
On one tour, he met self-labelled ‘nocore’ band My Precious in Singapore. Towson had just released his first CD with backing band The Conscripts (“The Straits of Gibraltar” EP), but he went straight back into Zero Interference studios to record tracks for a split release with My Precious. The resulting EP, “The Venom In My Veins” was enthusiastically taken up by community radio and Triple J’s Short.Fast.Loud, and gave a taste of things to come with the fledgling Conscripts.
Collaboration with fourteen musicians around the world allowed Towson to develop the concept of The Conscripts. He invited five musicians into the studio to work on a full-length release. Titled SHAH MAT (meaning “The King Is Dead”), it’s an album of musical and lyrical diversity, to be officially released in May 2006.
Illustrating this diversity, press and punters have compared Towson to artists as varied as Nick Cave, Billy Bragg, Jello Biafra, The Clash, The Pogues, The Ramones and Leonard Cohen. Musically Towson has rubbed shoulders with some of the big names in music, playing support to legendary Brit punk band The Stranglers, Billy Bragg (UK), Against Me! (USA), and Frenzal Rhomb (Australia).

Promised Land
Steve Towson Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You've got to get out of your bored rooms
and hear what is happening
down on the picket line
try hearing what we're saying stop dictating to us
from the corporate side
cause you won't get no second chance
cause unlike to you time is coming up
it's coming up and we're going
to the promised land
going to the promised land
going to the promised land
going to the promised land
I see my brother and father fighting
I see my mother she's working her fingers to the bone
trying to keep us fighting
our brothers and our fathers
in another land
well you may have won this battle
but the war it is not over
for while you sit there gloating
our people are coming from behind
to take the promised land
going to the promised land
I say no more killing in Palestine
I say no more killing in Mayanamar
I say all people are welcome
I say all people are our people
for this is our promised land
The opening lines of Steve Towson's song Promised Land speak to the need for people to leave their comfort zones, get out of their "bored rooms" and pay attention to what's happening in the world. The reference to the picket line suggests that there is unrest or protest taking place, and Towson urges people to listen to what's being said rather than simply accepting the messages being dictated by those in power. Towson also touches on the concept of time, suggesting that there may not be a second chance to act on these issues. Time is coming up, and people need to be prepared to join the movement for change.
The chorus, which repeats several times throughout the song, emphasizes the idea of the "promised land". This phrase has a long history in various cultures and traditions, often representing a place of safety, prosperity, and freedom. In Towson's song, the promised land is a place where people who are fighting for justice can come together and achieve their goals. It's a place where all people are welcome and can thrive, without fear of oppression or violence. Towson also makes specific references to conflict in Palestine and Mayanmar, suggesting that these are just a few of the global issues that require action and attention. The song calls on people to join together and work towards a better future for everyone.

The day we met
Frozen I held my breath
Right from the start
I knew that I'd found a home for my heart
Beats fast
Colors and promises
How to be brave?
How can I love when I'm afraid to fall?
But watching you stand alone
All of my doubt suddenly goes away somehow
One step closer
I have died everyday waiting for you
Darling, don't be afraid, I have loved you for a thousand years
I'll love you for a thousand more
Time stands still
Beauty in all she is
I will be brave
I will not let anything take away
What's standing in front of me
Every breath, every hour has come to this
One step closer
I have died everyday waiting for you
Darling, don't be afraid, I have loved you for a thousand years
I'll love you for a thousand more
And all along I believed I would find you
Time has brought your heart to me
I have loved you for a thousand years
I'll love you for a thousand more
Ooh-ooh
Ooh-ooh
I love you for a thousand more
Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh-ooh
Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh
One step closer
I have died everyday waiting for you
Darling, don't be afraid, I have loved you for a thousand years
I'll love you for a thousand more
And all along I believed I would find you
Time has brought your heart to me
I have loved you for a thousand years
I'll love you for a thousand more
