Laughter In The Rain
Steve Tyrell Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
It starts to rain, it begins to pour.
Without an umbrella we're soaked to the skin.
I feel a shiver run up my spine.
I feel the warmth of her hand in mine.
Oo, I hear laughter in the rain,
Walking hand in hand with the one I love.
After a while we run under a tree.
I turn to her and she kisses me.
There with the beat of the rain on the leaves
Softly she breathes and I close my eyes.
Sharing our love under stormy skies.
Oo, I hear laughter in the rain,
Walking hand in hand with the one I love.
Oo, how I love the rainy days and the happy way I feel inside.
I feel the warmth of her hand in mine.
Oo, I hear laughter in the rain,
Walking hand in hand with the one I love.
Oo, how I love the rainy days and the happy way I feel inside.
Oo, I hear laughter in the rain,
Walking hand in hand with the one I love.
Oo, how I love the rainy days and the happy way I feel inside.
Oo, I hear laughter in the rain,
Walking hand in hand with the one I love.
Oo, how I love the rainy days and the happy way I feel inside.
Oo, I hear laughter in the rain,
Walking hand in hand with the one I love.
Oo, how I love the rainy days and the happy way I feelinside
In this song, the singer is walking along country roads with their loved one when it begins to rain. Despite not having an umbrella, they continue to walk hand in hand and enjoy the rain together. Under a tree, they share a kiss while listening to the beat of the rain on the leaves. The singer feels a shiver run up their spine but also feels the warmth of their partner's hand in theirs. They hear laughter in the rain and express their love for rainy days and the happy feeling they have when they're together.
The lyrics of this song seem to suggest that the singer is truly happy with their loved one regardless of the circumstances. They don't need clear skies or sunshine to feel content in their relationship. Even under stormy skies, they are able to share their love and feel happy together. The motif of rain also seems to symbolize a renewal or a fresh start, washing away any negativity and bringing about a sense of clarity and joy.

We are in 2023… I’m 55 years old and I love this song. The arrangement is simply incredible.

"Here it is..." Years ago I was listening to an interview with Sedaka, talking about this song. And he talked about the importance of the "killer" transition and the killer chord. And obviously he was talking about the transition to "Oooo, I hear laughter...". It's a great song overall, but it's that transition to the killer chord that makes it the most memorable.

Killer reimagining of this track with the legendary Neil Sedaka! With the great Leland Sklar on bass to boot!
@Prof_Jeff
Sklar played bass on the original track in the '70s, so he probably jumped at the chance to work on this rendition. If you haven't, you should check out Sklar's episode on his YT channel where he discusses working with Neil on this way back when. There's also another episode where Sklar talks about working on "Bad Blood".
