On and On
Steven A. Clark Lyrics

By the time it takes
To change your mind
I′ll be dead or broke and tired
And maybe soon you'll heal
But this is all I feel
Every time I call your line, yeah, yeah

Saying you′re my best friend and I was dumb back then
I was wondering, can we have sex again?
May this be the last time
I'll keep you satisfied
You're used to them other dudes, but I′m the perfect guy
Conversations that lead to stress again
Calling me selfish, but you got too much drama with your friends
And with all of that drama, is it crazy to think
That you′ll never be too much for me

She said it sounds so sweet
This situation's getting hard for me
She′s ready to move on, oh so desperately
I thought she would wait, but life goes on and on and on

It goes on and on, yeah
It goes on and on, mama, yeah
It goes on and on (it goes on), yeah, yeah
It goes on and on
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, aye

You'll tell me something
That kills me every time
Usually mean
That, I kind of like
And I′ll go do something
To try to make you smile
Probably get denied, but I gotta try

Saying your my best friend and I was dumb back then
I was wondering, can we have sex again?
May this be the last time
I'll keep you satisfied
You′re used to them other dudes, but I'm the perfect guy
Conversations that lead to stress again
Calling me selfish, but you got too much drama with your friends
And with all of that drama, is it crazy to think
That you'll never be too much for me

She said it sounds so sweet (this sound so sweet)
This situation′s getting hard for me (for me)
She′s ready to move on, oh so desperately (desperately)
I thought she would wait, but life goes on and on and on, yeah

It goes on and on (it goes on, yeah)
It goes on and on, mama, yeah
It goes on and on
Aye, aye, aye
It goes on and on

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, aye
Oh, oh, oh

Overall Meaning

The song "On and On" by Steven A. Clark is a ballad of a man who is hopelessly devoted to a woman who doesn't reciprocate his feelings. He acknowledges that his love for her is unrequited as she constantly moves on from their past experiences. He expresses his need to keep making an effort for her and make her happy, despite the rejection he receives every time. He recognizes that they have different priorities in life and they want different things, yet he cannot seem to let her go. He admits that he is willing to compromise and satisfy her needs, even at the cost of his own happiness. Unfortunately, despite his efforts, she is ready to leave and move on with her life, forcing him to come to terms with the reality that life goes on, and it is time to let go of the past.

The song portrays the pain and struggle of unrequited love and failed relationships. The tone of the song is sad, regretful, and melancholic, as Steven A. Clark pours his heart out through his lyrics. He recognizes that the situation is beyond his control, and no matter how much he wants to hold on, he must ultimately let go and move on.

I, too, Just saw him at Chromeo concert Chicago 9/11/18, great show!!! Look up "A.R. Kane" UK singer from the late/ post 1988 era... he is the original sound of this sound before computers. He had to make anlog tape recordings to put all those sounds together a lot harder than computers today. Listen to his songs... like New Clear Child, Deep Blue Breath, Songs from Outer Space, etc.
