Tightrope
Stone Roses Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You should've been an angel, it would've suited you
My gold-leaf tryptic angel, she knows just what to do
In the half-light of morning, in a world between the sheets
I swear I saw her angel wing, my vision was complete

And I know I'll never want another lover, my sweet
Can there be more in this world than the joy of just watching ya sleep?
I don't know just what to feel
Won't someone tell me my love's real?

Are we etched in stone or just scratched in the sand
Waiting for the waves to come and reclaim the land?
Will the sunshine all sweetness and light
Burn us to a cinder, our third stone satellite?

I'm on a tightrope, baby, nine miles high
Striding through the clouds on my ribbon in the sky
I'm on a tightrope, baby, one thing I've found
I don't know how to stop
And it's a long, long, long, long way down

She's all that ever mattered and all that ever will
My cup, it runneth over, I'll never get my fill
The boats in the harbor slip from their chains
Head for new horizons, let's do the same

I'm on a tightrope, baby, nine miles high
Striding through the clouds on my ribbon in the sky
I'm on a tightrope, baby, one thing I've found
I don't know how to stop
And it's a tightrope, baby, nine miles high
Striding through the clouds on my ribbon in the sky
I'm on a tightrope, baby, one thing I've found

I don't know how to stop
And it's a long, long, long, long way down

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Stone Roses' "Tightrope" are about the feeling of being caught in between two extremes: the joy of being in love and the fear of losing it. The first verse is about a lover who is so perfect that they could've been an angel. The singer is enchanted by the angelic qualities of their lover and feels a sense of completeness when he sees her angel wing. He swears that he doesn't want another lover and that the joy of just watching her sleep is enough for him.

However, the second verse introduces a feeling of uncertainty and instability. The lyrics ask if they are etched in stone or just scratched in the sand, waiting to be claimed by the waves. The fear that the joy they are experiencing might turn to ashes and the relationship might not last is palpable. The singer feels like he is walking on a tightrope, high up in the sky, and doesn't know how to stop. He knows that if he falls, it's going to be a long way down. The bridge section reaffirms the singer's love for his partner and his commitment to heading to new horizons with her, but the fear of the unknown and the possibility of things not working out continues to linger.

Overall, the lyrics of "Tightrope" are a potent mix of romantic devotion, fear, and uncertainty. They capture the intensity of being in love and the anxiety that comes with it.

You should've been an angel, it would've suited you

My gold-leaf tryptic angel, she knows just what to do

In the half-light of morning, in a world between the sheets

I swear I saw her angel wing, my vision was complete

Y sé que nunca querré otro amante, cariño
And I know I'll never want another lover, my sweet

Can there be more in this world than the joy of just watching ya sleep?

No se que sentir
I don't know just what to feel

Won't someone tell me my love's real?

Are we etched in stone or just scratched in the sand

Waiting for the waves to come and reclaim the land?

Will the sunshine all sweetness and light

Burn us to a cinder, our third stone satellite?

I'm on a tightrope, baby, nine miles high

Striding through the clouds on my ribbon in the sky

I'm on a tightrope, baby, one thing I've found

No se como parar
I don't know how to stop

And it's a long, long, long, long way down

She's all that ever mattered and all that ever will

Mi copa, se derrama, nunca me llenaré
My cup, it runneth over, I'll never get my fill

The boats in the harbor slip from their chains

Dirígete a nuevos horizontes, hagamos lo mismo
Head for new horizons, let's do the same

I'm on a tightrope, baby, nine miles high

Striding through the clouds on my ribbon in the sky

I'm on a tightrope, baby, one thing I've found

No se como parar
I don't know how to stop

And it's a tightrope, baby, nine miles high

Striding through the clouds on my ribbon in the sky

I'm on a tightrope, baby, one thing I've found

No se como parar
I don't know how to stop

And it's a long, long, long, long way down

The more you listen to the second coming the more it grows on you. It's a fucking masterpiece.

@miketeller6582

No it's not. nothing touches their debut but this album is so utterly average it's sad.

@kevdavison8058

Oce agreed

@sunshaped

@mike teller so wrong you are..about it being average. It's a beautiful trip. Wouldn't rate it against the debut though. But I also think the debut is somewhat overrated. The compilation Turns into Stone blows the debut out of the water as a collection of songs.

@adamwalkeraw

@mike teller go listen to tears, squires works as good as anything on the first album, second comings one i would listen to more, only so many times u can listen to fools gold lol

@damionleetaylor

Damn straight. Many years ago I moved onto a 10th floor flat/apartment. Nothing but the floor and a music player. I got a grant to decorate at Christmas and I bought this album. Lifted me up so high. Am thankful 🙏

“Are we etched in stone or just scratched in the sand “ always loved this tune 😊😊😊

@mjoneill67

This line, along with so many others in this track, proves to me that Ian brown is one of, if not the best British lyricist there's even been.

@robbneil5561

One of the most under rated albums in my 37 yrs on this daft globe....shared sentiment, a tour de force of an album....a belter!!!

@Bioniking

The debut is an undisputed masterpiece. But I actually prefer this album. There's something so warm and human about this song. Love it!
