The Stone Roses released their second album, Second Coming, in 1994, which received mixed reviews. The group soon disbanded after several line-up changes throughout the supporting tour, which began with Reni departing in early 1995, followed by Squire in April 1996. Brown and Mani dissolved the remains of the group in October 1996 following their appearance at Reading Festival.
Following much intensified media speculation, the Stone Roses called a press conference on 18 October 2011 to announce that the band had reunited and would perform a reunion world tour in 2012, including three homecoming shows in Heaton Park, Manchester. Plans to record a third album in the future were also floated but only two singles were released. In June 2012, Chris Coghill, the writer of a new film which is set during the Stone Roses 1990 Spike Island show, revealed that the band "have at least three or four new tracks recorded". In June 2013, a documentary about the band's reformation directed by Shane Meadows and titled The Stone Roses: Made of Stone was released.
In 2016, the Stone Roses released their first new material in two decades. The band members continued to tour until June 2017, at which point cryptic remarks by Brown indicated the band had split again, which was later confirmed in a 2019 interview with Squire.

The Stone Roses Lyrics

My gold-leaf tryptic angel, she knows just what to do
In the half-light of morning, in a world between the sheets
I swear I saw her angel wing, my vision was complete
And I know I'll never want another lover, my sweet
Can there be more in this world than the joy of just watching ya sleep?
I don't know just what to feel
Are we etched in stone or just scratched in the sand
Waiting for the waves to come and reclaim the land?
Will the sunshine all sweetness and light
Burn us to a cinder, our third stone satellite?
I'm on a tightrope, baby, nine miles high
Striding through the clouds on my ribbon in the sky
I'm on a tightrope, baby, one thing I've found
I don't know how to stop
And it's a long, long, long, long way down
She's all that ever mattered and all that ever will
My cup, it runneth over, I'll never get my fill
The boats in the harbor slip from their chains
Head for new horizons, let's do the same
I'm on a tightrope, baby, nine miles high
Striding through the clouds on my ribbon in the sky
I'm on a tightrope, baby, one thing I've found
I don't know how to stop
And it's a tightrope, baby, nine miles high
Striding through the clouds on my ribbon in the sky
I'm on a tightrope, baby, one thing I've found
I don't know how to stop
And it's a long, long, long, long way down
The Stone Roses' song "Tightrope" is a love song, but it's not your typical love song, as it conveys a feeling of uncertainty or even precariousness in love. The song's lyrics describe a woman who is like an angel, who embodies perfection and grace. The singer of the song seems to be enamored with this woman, but there's a sense of ambivalence and doubt as well. He wonders if their love is real or if it's just a fleeting thing that will be washed away by the tide. He also feels like he's walking on a tightrope, as if his love is a balancing act that could easily falter and send him tumbling down.
The lyrics are beautifully poetic and offer a nuanced portrayal of love that is both passionate and uncertain. The imagery of the angel and the tightrope heighten the tension and create a sense of danger and vulnerability that is palpable throughout the song. The Stone Roses' dreamy, psychedelic sound also adds to the beauty and complexity of the lyrics, creating a lush soundscape that perfectly captures the romantic longing and uncertainty that permeates the song.
