Until You Leave
Stoney Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

White trim, big bling, bass bin
pounding thru suburban hell
All the curtains twitch
(Nothing ever seems to change round here)
Pub shut, half cut, kebab hut
heaving with a clientele of legless wit
(Everything is still the same round here)
And it's always good seeing old friends,
but I don't miss this place one bit

Chorus (oohs)
There's nothing to do
You either get pissed up or you move
It's hard to believe
but you don't see it till you leave
Until you leave

V2
Same slang, kid gangs still hang out
around the late night Spar, like we used to do
(Nothing ever seems to change round here)
School night, fistfight, Diamond White trying out the fake ID, sweating in the queue
(Everyone wants to escape round here)
And everything runs like clockwork and all hangs out when you stop work.

Chorus (oohs)
There's nothing to do,
you either get pissed up or you move
It's hard to believe
but you don't see it till you leave
Until you leave,

Until you leave,
Until you leave

Overall Meaning

In "Until You Leave," Stoney paints a vivid picture of a suburban town that seems stagnant in time, with its familiar sights and sounds remaining unchanged. The lively, pulsating beats of bass bin speakers pound through the place, announcing restless attempts to break the monotony of the mundane routine. Even the kebab hut bustling with legless wit and old friends gathered for a raucous night out don't make it any more interesting; the charm has vanished over time, and the pub shuts at last, leaving the constancy of this reality to hit home. The scenarios and people remain the same; only the person singing the song has got out and returned to view the town from the lens of an outsider. There is relief for the singer in seeing old friends, but he doesn't miss the place at all. The chorus conveys the message accurately as it sings that either the residents of the town get drunk, or they leave as there is nothing else to do. The song aims to assert that sometimes it's only after leaving a place that one realizes the monotony and the clichés of it all.

In the second verse, Stoney talks about how things have remained the same despite the passage of time. "Nothing ever seems to change round here," and "Everyone wants to escape round here," the lyrics paint a picture of a society where young people turn to night-time haunts in search of excitement and a break from the mundane routine. They still congregate around the same Spar supermarket late at night as they used to, try out fake IDs in the Diamond White nightclub, and fight at school. Although life runs smoothly, it's predictable, and nothing changes. The chorus repeats itself, emphasizing the point that when one leaves such a town, it becomes apparent how dull it was.
