The band consists of vocalist Dan Marsala, lead guitarist Ryan Phillips, rhythm guitarist and back up vocalist Philip Sneed, bassist Adam Russell and drummer Josh Wills. Initially named Big Blue Monkey, they changed their name to Story of the Year in 2002 because a blues group of the same name had already existed.
It would not be until eight years after forming that Story of the Year saw its first piece of commercial success in its major label debut, Page Avenue, containing the popular singles "Until the Day I Die" and "Anthem of Our Dying Day". A second album, In the Wake of Determination, followed in 2005, but did not achieve the success of its predecessor. The band has returned with their third album The Black Swan, their first on Epitaph Records, which was released on April 22, 2008.
The band toured with Linkin Park on the Meteora World Tour in 2004 along with P.O.D. and Hoobastank.
The band's fourth, The Constant, was released on February 16, 2010 through Epitaph Records.
On March 8, 2013 it was announced that the band are planning on a world tour.
Choose Your Fate
Story of the Year Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Have you ever given any thought to the fate of your children?
We've made good progress?
[Scrambled words]
Slowly but surely achieving our objective?
Liar!
Slip from the tongue
Call to die
Kiss with a bomb
From the heart of the promise no more world
In a home that's broken and silent
The truth will not be heard
In the forceful world of a tyrant
Freedom is a loaded word
Compliance!
It's more than code
It's a contest of fate for
The corrupt
What power is love
Finally chance widely smiled upon
In a place where god is abandoned
Freedom can become a curse
Yeah beggar!
Choose your fate!
The reaction!
The reaction is awake!
So choose your fate!
The reaction!
The reaction is awake!
Cause when the meaning fails to be objectified
Lies will carry through
Until you see them staring from the other side
Back at you
Back at you
You!
You!
Now they were trying to sell you
From your word
From your word
Yeah
When the meaning fails to be objectified
(To be objectified)
Then your lies will stare back at you from the other side
(From the other side)
Beggar!
Choose your fate!
The reaction!
The reaction is awake!
So choose your fate!
The reaction!
The reaction is awake!
Yeah!
Awake!
Yeah!
Awake!
Choose your, own fate!
Already!
The reaction is awake!
Yeah!
Liar!
Liar!
Liar!
Liar!
The spoken intro to the song "Choose Your Fate" by Story of the Year addresses a serious question: have we considered the fate of our children? The scrambled words that follow suggest that perhaps we have not yet made enough progress in achieving our objectives. The song then transitions into an aggressive, hard-hitting chorus that seems to call out liars and corrupt individuals who are taking advantage of their power. The lyrics suggest that in a broken home or society, the truth cannot be heard and freedom is a loaded word. The song urges the listener to choose their own fate and be aware of the lies that may come their way.
Throughout the song, there is a theme of power and how it can corrupt. Compliance with corrupt individuals is more than just following a code, it's a contest of fate. The lyrics suggest that love is a powerful force, but it can also be used to hurt and manipulate others. The chorus repeats the phrase "choose your fate" as a call to action for the listener to take control of their destiny and not let others dictate their path.
Overall, "Choose Your Fate" is a powerful and intense song that challenges the listener to be aware of the power dynamics at play in their lives and make their own choices.
