Under The Bridge
Straight No Chaser Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sometimes I feel like
I don't have a partner
Sometimes I feel like
My only friend

Is the city I live in
The city of angels
Lonely as I am
Together we cry

I drive on her streets
'Cause she's my companion
I walk through her hills
'Cause she knows who I am

She sees my good deeds
And kisses me windy
Well, I never worry
Now, that is a lie

I don't ever wanna feel
Like I did that day
Take me to the place I love
Take me all the way

I don't ever wanna feel
Like I did that day
Take me to the place I love
Take me all the way

She knows who I am

It's hard to believe that
There's nobody out there
It's hard to believe
That I'm all alone

At least I have her love
And the city she loves me
Lonely as I am, together we cry

I don't ever wanna feel
Like I did that day
Take me to the place I love
Take me all the way

I don't ever wanna feel
Like I did that day
Take me to the place I love
Take me all the way

Hold on, hold on, love me
Hold on, hold on, love me
Hold on, hold on, hold on
Hold on, hold on

Under the bridge downtown
Is where I drew some blood
Under the bridge downtown
I could not get enough

Under the bridge downtown
Forgot about my love
Under the bridge downtown
I threw my life away

Away, yeah, yeah
Away, yeah, yeah

Oh no, no no, yeah, yeah
Oh no, oh no, yeah, yeah

Overall Meaning

The opening verse of Straight No Chaser's "Under The Bridge" is a contemplative reflection on the singer’s loneliness. The singer confesses to feeling like they don't have anyone to turn to for companionship and friendship. However, the city (Los Angeles) the singer lives in has taken the place of a friend for them. It's a stark reminder that even in the midst of a bustling city full of people, it can still be challenging to find a deep connection with others. The singer's relationship with the city is far from one-sided. They drive on her streets, walk in her hills, and do good deeds under L.A.'s attentive gaze. The wind that blows on the streets of the city kisses the singer, a comforting gesture in the midst of loneliness. However, the singer admits that not worrying is a lie.

The chorus repeats the phrase "take me to the place I love," which is the bridge where the singer drew some blood. The bridge represents a place of both pain and liberation for the singer. The singer is distressed by the thought of returning to that feeling of despair and wants to go to the other side of the spectrum, the place where they felt alive and significant. The singer throws in a few "hold on, love me"s, a plea for connection.

The bridge represents the line between the two opposing forces in the song—loneliness and love. The singer has thrown their life away, but they want to be brought back to life. The bridge is where the singer can cross over from the destructive force of loneliness to the invigorating power of love.

from a vocalist and a instrument player, i would say that the hardest instrument ive ever played is my voice and i would love to sing like them. i play guitar, sing, violin, viola, cello, bass, and flute. if people say that playing an instrument is harder, they clearly have never sang in a professional choir or even taken vocal lesson. anyone can press a key or put their finger on a string, but it takes some real talent to be able to control your voice in an amazing manner like them.

Cuánto talento! Una interpretación maravillosa .

As a true TRUE Red Hot Chili Peppers fan and a musician, I'd like to speak for some of the negative "true" fans here. To the fans: you guys don't have to like it; music is music and someone somewhere will like whatever it sounds like. This cover was well created. It captured harmonies and the intro has pretty accurate timing. As for my own input, however, I felt that this was way too fast for such a mellow song. If it was just slower, and fully played, then it would be perfect.

WOW, this is Sooo good!!! Respect!! <3

This is the only group I know of that can consistently make covers of songs that I enjoy more than the original.

To people who say 'real' fans of RHCP wouldn't like this- it's very possible they will. I'm proof!! THis is amazing, and so is the original.

i must say, i sing in an acapella group, i love straight no chaser, they extremely good, but, that being said, this is a poem about Anthony Kiedis heroine addiction, it seems to happy and joyful, takes some meaning away from the song, this is a song that just cant be covered in the right way no matter who or how

Huh, congrats, Strait No Chaser. You took a song I don't particularly care for and made me actually listen to the beautifully written lyrics for the first time.
