Strawbs - Benedictus

The wanderer has far to go
Humble must he constant be
Where the paths of wisdom
Distant is the shadow of the setting sun.

Bless the daytime
Bless the night
Bless the sun which gives us light
Bless the thunder
Bless the rain
Bless all those who cause us pain.

Yellow stars may lead the way
All diversions lead astray
While his resolution holds
Fortune and good will will surely follow him.

Bless the free man
Bless the slave
Bless the hero in his grave
Bless the soldier

Bless the saint
Bless all those whose hearts grow faint.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of the song Benedictus by Strawbs are about a wandering person who has a long journey ahead. The person is advised to remain humble throughout their journey, and to remain focused on the path of wisdom. The traveler is informed that the shadow of the setting sun is far away, thus, implying that they have a lot of time to fulfill their journey’s goal. The lyrics suggest that the traveler should have faith and believe in the path they have chosen as long as they remain faithful and truthful to themselves.

The song engages the listener with its prayer-like structure, and through the lyrics, the listener is introduced to the power of blessings. The chorus repeatedly blesses different elements in our lives, such as the daytime, the night, the sun, the thunder, the rain, and all those who cause us pain. This can be interpreted as a call to unconditional love and acceptance. It suggests that we should bless even those who wrong us, and to understand that pain is part of the journey in life.

I'm so thankful to have lived in the 70's (I was in my 20's) The music and musicians were/are amazing. Decades later, this is STILL a great song. We had some great songs back then. Love that Hammond, Mellotron, guitar, drums, & the words have an amazing impact. A Most excellent production.
Bless the Strawbs. and THANK YOU, guys !!!!!!!!!

@otismurfer

@johnwemm8848

@@frankylee7442no, it isn't Rick, he is on the 2 earlier albums...Blue Weaver plays keyboards here.

@thomasreed181

One of my favorite songs. It’s been a while since I’ve heard it. This was to me their best album.
Moody Blues, Strawbs, Yes, Jethro Tull just a few of the most iconic groups of classical rock.

@Mark Engel
I am 66. I’ll take your advice Mark and listen to “Heat Above”.
Sorry to say I am not familiar with the song but since you put with these iconic groups it must be great.

@delby66

You forgot ELP, Genesis, Camel, King Crimson and Renaissance, just name a few more.

@clarenceclutterbuck

Great song. And Dave Cousins has one of those "oak aged" voices like a fine whisky that adds persuasive power to the overall confection.

@louiseed1997
