Eclipse of the Son
Stryper Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I′ve been running nowhere street
I've got to mend my bloody feet
I′ve thrown away ten thousand days
I've hidden black and white and painted gray

In my weakness, out of pride
I failed to see the other side
It's a lost and broken war
That I won′t fight for anymore

Where did I go wrong?
A shattered life, a wasted song
I composed, I lived and wrote each one
What is destiny?
To live and love and die honorably
So I′ll trade my eclipse for the son

I want to make a difference
I want my life to make some sense
'Cause when it′s all over
I will have to answer for myself

I'm tearing down my rotten fence
And burying my weak defense
I want to crossover
Its time to take my heart off of the shelf

Where did I go wrong?
A shattered life, a wasted song
I composed, I lived and wrote each one
What is destiny?
To live and love and die honorably
So I′ll trade my eclipse for the son

Where did I go wrong?
A shattered life, a wasted song
What is destiny?
To live and love and die honorably
So I'll trade my eclipse for the son
Where did I go wrong?
A shattered life, a wasted song
Oooh
What is destiny?
To live and love and die honorably
So I′ll trade my eclipse for the son

Overall Meaning

Stryper’s song Eclipse of the Son is a meditation on the human tendency to lose our way, to get caught up in our own weaknesses and limited perspectives, and to miss the bigger picture of what’s important in life. The lyrics suggest that we all have the capacity to make mistakes, to falter in our journey, and to lose touch with the source of our strength and purpose. The singer in the song is confessing to these shortcomings and seeking a way to reclaim his sense of direction and purpose.

The opening lyrics set the tone for the rest of the song, with the singer lamenting his aimless wandering and the physical toll it has taken on him. He acknowledges that he has wasted a lot of time, and that he has been too focused on his own narrow concerns. The chorus asks the central question of the song – where did I go wrong? – and then reiterates that the singer is seeking a new direction, a new sense of purpose, and a new understanding of his role in life. The second verse continues these themes, with the singer becoming more specific about the ways in which he has failed to live up to his potential. He notes that he has composed and written many songs, but also recognizes that some of them have been wasted or poorly crafted. The key line is “what is destiny?” – a question that suggests that the singer is grappling with larger metaphysical and spiritual issues. Finally, the last verse offers a resolution of sorts, with the singer committing to tearing down his “rotten fence” and embracing a new path. The phrase “trade my eclipse for the son” suggests that the singer is moving away from the darkness and confusion of his past and towards a brighter, more hopeful future.

"it doesn't sound like the 80's Stryper anymore". Ummm that's because it's NOT the 80's anymore! Yes I understand that some people still live in the 80's but not everyone is stuck in one time period and un-able to move on. Stryper are living, breathing, creative artists that express part of who they are through the music that they present to the world. If you find that one of their songs isn't so much a style you can get in to, well there are plenty of other songs and their older work you can listen to. Stryper might have been categorized as "glam metal", "hair metal", "heavy metal", but they truly weren't 100% of any of those categories. Stryper has always had trashy/punk elements to their style, as well as other influences. As living, breathing, creative artists, they will constantly be changing and trying new things. If you respect them, and/or any of their previous music then try to respect them as artists as well. They deserve that much.
