Hunger
Styles Harry Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Candles burnt down to the floor
Wearing less than you wore before
Shoes sitting by the door never put them on
We would stay in my house for days
Spilling breakfast on pillowcases
Your stuff don’t taste the same
Now that you’re gone
I guess I’m prone to overthinking
One thing goes wrong and I can’t adjust
I’ve lost the taste for the good in us
And I’m sorry

We had a hunger then only each other then
Couldn’t get enough when we started
Always a hunger then now it’s just emptiness
We were in love, we were starving
We had a hunger then

We could ruin a perfect night
On my birthday I made you cry
You told me you learned to drive
I guess you lied
I could never get sick of you
I just bit off more than I could chew
And as one year turns into two
I’m still not over you, still not over you

We had a hunger then only each other then
Couldn't get enough when we started
Always a hunger then now it’s just emptiness
We were in love we were starving
We had a hunger then

I guess I’m prone to overthinking
I lost my taste for the good in us
I never call when I knew I should
And I’m sorry, I’m sorry, oh

We had a hunger then only each other then
Couldn’t get enough when we started
Always a hunger then we had a hunger then
Now it’s just emptiness
We were in love, we were starving
We had a hunger then (Oh)
We had a hunger then now it’s just emptiness

We were in love, we were starving
We had a hunger then

Overall Meaning

In these lyrics, Harry Styles reflects on a past relationship that has left him feeling empty and longing for what once was. The imagery of candles burnt down to the floor and wearing less than before suggests the intimacy and vulnerability that was present in their relationship. The shoes sitting by the door symbolize the absence of his partner and the feeling of not being able to move forward without them. The spilled breakfast on pillowcases implies a sense of carelessness or recklessness, perhaps indicating that their love was once consuming and passionate.

Styles admits that he tends to overthink and struggle to adapt when things go wrong, hinting at a sense of insecurity or fear of losing what he cherishes. He laments losing the taste for the goodness in their relationship and expresses regret for the role he played in its demise.

The chorus emphasizes the hunger they had for each other in the beginning of their relationship. They couldn't get enough of each other, and their love was all-consuming. However, now that they are no longer together, that hunger has turned into emptiness. The mention of ruining a perfect night and making his partner cry showcases the challenging dynamics that existed between them, suggesting that their love was not without its flaws.

Styles expresses his inability to move on from this relationship, despite the passing of time. He still feels strongly for his partner and acknowledges that he may have bitten off more than he could chew, implying that he might have overwhelmed them with his intensity.

The repetition of "we had a hunger then" throughout the song reinforces the theme that their love was once fierce and passionate. However, as the song progresses, it becomes clear that their hunger has transformed into emptiness. Styles recognizes his own shortcomings and apologizes for not reaching out when he should have.

In summary, these lyrics delve into the complexities of a relationship that once burned bright but has now left Harry Styles feeling hollow. He reflects on the intense hunger they once shared, but acknowledges that it has evolved into emptiness. There is a sense of regret and self-awareness in his words as he takes responsibility for losing sight of the goodness in their love.

I genuinely think this is one of his best songs ever written lyrically

yes

@mrskate8914

“Already Home” gets me every time. I’m not usually a weeper but I tear up💩 every time. Plus I’m pretty sure this isn’t Harry’s voice. Just imagine they have dozens & dozens unreleased demos & unrecorded songs. Louis said he wrote over 100 just working on LT2. All of them wouldn’t be A+ of course. But I’m sure there’s lots of good ones. Maybe he’ll let out a few more before Nov 11. Hope so. Be well
