Written by Buddy Randell, Beau Charles
Lead vocals by Dennis DeYoung

lies lies
you're telling me that you'll be true

lies lies
that's all I ever get from you

tears tears
I shed a million tears for you

tears tears
and now you're loving someone new

someday you're gonna be happy
but I don't know when just now

lies
lies - breaking my heart

you think that you're such a smart girl
and I'll believe what you say
but who do you think you are girl
to lead me on this way?

lies lies
I can't believe a word you say

lies lies
I'm gonna make you sad someday

someday you're gonna be lonely
but you won't find me around

lies
lies - breaking my heart

yeah

someday you're gonna be lonely
but you won't find me around

lies
lies - breaking my heart

you think that you're such a smart girl
and I'll believe what you say
but who do you think you are girl
to lead me on this way?

lies lies
I can't believe a word you say

lies lies
I'm gonna make you sad someday

someday you're gonna be lonely
but you won't find me around

lies
lies - breaking my heart

breaking my heart
breaking my heart
breaking my heart

breaking my heart
breaking my heart

Overall Meaning

Styx's song "Lies" is a heartbreakingly honest piece about a partner who is dishonest in their relationship. The lyrics reflect the heartbreak felt by the singer as he uncovers the web of lies spun by his partner. The chorus repeats the words "lies lies," hammering home the theme of deceit and false promises by the partner. Tears are shed as the singer realizes that his partner has moved on to someone new, leaving him alone and heartbroken.

In the song, the singer insists that the lies will catch up to the partner eventually, and that she will experience the same pain and loneliness that she has inflicted on him. The final repetition of "breaking my heart" is particularly poignant, with the weight of the betrayal fully sinking in. The song ends with the singer accepting the reality of the situation and resolving to move on.

Overall, Styx's "Lies" is a powerful and relatable song about the confusion and pain that comes with being deceived by someone you love. It speaks to the universal human experience of betrayal and the eventual need to heal and move forward.

Lies, lies, you're tellin' me that you'll be true
Lies, lies
That's all I ever hear from you
Tears, tears
I shed a million tears for you
Tears, tears
And now you're lovin' someone new
Someday I'm gonna be happy
But I don't know when just now
Lies, lie-ies
A-breakin' my heart
You think that you're such a smart girl
And I'll believe what you say
But who do you think you are, girl
To lead me on this way hey
Lies, lies
I can't believe a word you say
Lies, lies
Are gonna make you sad someday
Some day you're gonna be lonely
But you won't find me around
Lies, lie-ies
A-breakin' my heart
Someday I'm gonna be happy
But I don't know when just now
Lies, lie-ies
A-breakin' my heart
You think that you're such a smart girl
And I'll believe what you say
But who do you think you are, girl
To lead me on this way hey
Lies (ah!), lies (yeah baby)
I can't believe a word you say
Lies, lies
Are gonna make you sad someday
Some day you're gonna be lonely
But you won't find me around
Lies, lie-ies
A-breakin' my heart
I said, baby, now (breakin' my heart)
Oh, yeah, you're still breakin' my heart (breakin' my heart)

Very tight version. Faithful to the original. Looked for this many years ago without success. Thanks for posting. Very nice pairing for Dennis's voice range.

This is one of the all-time greatest covers ever. It's a shame that it sounds so blindingly bright on the remaster.

the true old Styx-Sound with a fantastic voice by Dennis

I burst out laughing when I first heard this on Pandora! Styx, the band who brought us Mr. Roboto and Come Sail Away, covering what is essentially an early Beatles knockoff. That is crazy.

Sounds so 60's very early 70's!!! Great song! Had no idea it was a Beatles song. The band sounds tight and definitely on their way to Big Things!

SlimesByHB

It’s not a Beatles song. It was recorded by the Knickerbockers. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lies_(The_Knickerbockers_song)

An (obviously) great remake of this old Knickerbockers hit. Wooden Nickel replaced it with "Best Thing" on their numerous reissues after Styx hit the big time. Thankfully, they put it back on the The Complete Wooden Nickel Recordings cd.

That explains it...I always wondered why "Best Thing" was on both my Styx 1 and "Man Of Miracles" LPs...My Wooden Nickel copy of "Man Of Miracles" is a reissue...never heard this before. Great cover!

Another version (Miracles, Not Man of Miracles) has "Unfinished Song" in place of Best Thing, on it.
