Lorelei
Styx Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When I think of Lorelei, my head turns all around
As gentle as a butterfly, she moves without a sound
I call her on the telephone, she says be there by eight
Tonight's the night she's movin' in and I can hardly wait

The way she moves, oh oh oh, I gotta say

Lorelei, let's live together
Brighter than the stars, forever
Lorelei, let's live together
Brighter than the stars, forever
Oh baby, forever

Her eyes become a paradise, she softly speaks my name
She brightens every lonely night, no one's quite the same
She calls me on the telephone, she says be there by eight
Tonight's the night she's movin' in, it's time to celebrate

The way she moves, oh oh oh, I gotta say

Lorelei, let's live together
Brighter than the stars, forever
Lorelei, let's live together
Brighter than the stars, forever
Baby, baby, forever

Lorelei, let's live together
Brighter than the stars, forever
Lorelei, let's live together
Brighter than the stars, forever
Lorelei, let's live together
Brighter than the stars, forever
Lorelei, let's live together

Brighter than the stars, forever
Lorelei, let's live together

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Styx's song "Lorelei" describe the singer's infatuation with a woman named Lorelei. He is enamored with her graceful movements and charming personality, and eagerly anticipates her moving in with him. Throughout the song, he expresses his desire to spend his life with her, and imagines a bright future together under the stars.

The reference to "Lorelei" is a nod to German folklore, in which Lorelei is a siren who lures sailors to their deaths with her song. This connection to a seductive, mythical figure adds a layer of romanticism to the lyrics.

The song is also notable for its catchy melody and upbeat tempo. The chorus in particular is easy to sing along to, making it a popular choice for radio play and live performances.

My granddaughter was born 2 hours ago. Her name is Lorelei. I've been pushing for this name for the past 5 months. I found out 30 minutes before her birth that she would be named Lorelei. How can she not grow up to be the coolest kid ever. Lorelei , I'll love you forever. Happy birthday today.

Beautiful! If I had it to do over, I'd take this name into serious consideration for one of my daughters. Glad to hear young parents are choosing this lovely, melodic, rare name. Congrats on the grandbaby, too! I see by your post that she's probably around three or four years old now. 🤗💖🙏

Love telling the story of how Styx (and REO) played my high school, when on the cusp of fame. A year later they were too big, but for that shining moment...
Oh, to be a teen in the 70's once again.

@robmitchell801

Music has changed forever and you can't get that era back. My parents wanted their era of the big bands back, but that didn't happen except on tape, 8 track, vinyl, and CD. The 70's was a great time to appreciate music.

@chevy2003ism

I seen Styx in Concert in 1976 along with Blue Oyster Cult, and Rush all at the same Concert. It only cost me $6.50..Great Concert to, and I Love this song!

@Worrell057

I've told youngsters about what concerts like that cost back then. If a ticket was $10 I couldn't afford to go, because the extra 3 bucks was my gas money back home.
