Beneath the Crown
SubRosa Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Don't tread the path of the enlightened
Don't swallow their sugared seeds of poison
Their Da'ath leads to that black moonrise
Where the bodies stack up to the rafters

We touch the planets yet we're no closer to the heavens
We gaze at the stars from our pig trough
We map the silver depths of the ocean
While we bathe in the blood of the hated

Spare me from your kingdom

Born without a coin in my mouth
I still crawl toward the sun
Hands in the cracks of the walls of your mind
I dismantle your thoughts

Eating grapes in dens of steel
Buffing that old carnage wheel

Sitting safe on marble thrones
Perched atop levees of bones

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of SubRosa's "Beneath the Crown" speak of the dangers of following blindly towards the "enlightened" and the lies they feed. The singer warns against succumbing to their sweet-tasting lies, for it leads to the darkness where the body count rises. The next stanza speaks of how humanity has achieved so much in terms of understanding and exploration, yet is still mired in its own selfishness and indulgence. Even with all the advances, we're still no closer to understanding the true nature of the universe we inhabit. The singer laments the pitiful reality of how humanity indulges in luxury while bathing in the blood of those we resent. The next passage speaks of a longing to be spared from this kingdom, indicating the singer does not wish to be a part of this reality. The final section speaks of a persistence despite the odds, born without privilege yet still striving towards the light. The singer seeks to dismantle the thoughts of the inhumane and all the while indulging in luxury, taking advantage of his status.
