Trash
Suede Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh maybe, maybe it's the clothes we wear
The tasteless bracelets and the dye in our hair
Maybe it's our kookiness
Or maybe, maybe it's our nowhere towns
Our nothing places and our cellophane sounds
Maybe it's our looseness

But we're trash, you and me
We're the litter on the breeze
We're the lovers on the streets
Just trash, me and you
It's in everything we do
It's in everything we do

Oh maybe, maybe it's the things we say
The words we've heard and the music we play
Maybe it's our cheapness
Or maybe, maybe it's the times we've had
The lazy days and the crazes and the fads
Maybe it's our sweetness

But we're trash, you and me
We're the litter on the breeze
We're the lovers on the streets
Just trash, me and you
It's in everything we do
It's in everything we do

We're trash, you and me
We're the lovers on the streets
We're the litter on the breeze
Just trash, me and you
It's in everything we do
It's in everything we do

Oh, you and me, yeah
You and me
(We're the litter on the breeze)

Oh, you and me, yeah

You and me
(It's in everything we do)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Suede's song Trash seem to reflect on the idea of society's obsession with appearances and materialism. The singer suggests that they could be considered "trash" due to their unconventional style of dress, living in small, unremarkable towns, and playing "cheap" music. However, they also allude to moments of sweetness and laziness, perhaps suggesting that there is more to them than meets the eye.

The line "Maybe it's our nowhere towns, our nothing places and our cellophane sounds" suggests a feeling of smallness or insignificance, yet there is also an embrace of this identity. The singer seems to find comfort in the fact that they are "just trash" with another person, and that this identity is pervasive in everything they do.

The repetition of "you and me" in the chorus emphasizes the connection between the singer and the person they are addressing. Despite the perceived flaws and societal labels, they see themselves as being in it together as "trash."

Overall, the lyrics of Trash speak to the idea of finding acceptance and connection in a world that often values superficial appearances.

Best song ever!!!

I like this version! I like it a lot!

Haha it's not so much that Brett's voice changed so much (as voices do with age granted). It's just on the original mix, the song was at a much slower tempo, and Ed Buller consequently speeded it up - thus naturally increasing Brett's voice pitch. Brett hated it, particulary when one journalist asked if he was singing on 'helium'. He accused Ed Buller of making him sound like 'fucking pinky and perky'. Thus he recorded this version!

Theme Park Fok

Ben Dickoff The band seem to not realise that certain unplanned characteristics of their early songs really became a part of the timeless sound. The high pitched distant vocals on Trash, or the warm hazey thunder of New Generation (which I think is one of the most wonderful sounding rock songs Ive ever heard, yet its own producer called it the worst mix ever, saying it should have sounded more of a straightforward thrash guitar track??).

‘Too much reverb’ is always mentioned, but the reverb sound on many Suede tracks is complex and beautiful, not slapped on, and without this it simply wouldn’t sound as surreal as Suede does. Good thing they don’t go around remixing their classic tracks, though I wouldnt mind a less tinny sounding Animal Nitrate

@78271ms It's a nice alternate take even though the original is much better, That juice in his vocals is something marvellous.

It's like Brett doing karaoke to Suede. Sounds like the voice is separate from the rest of the mix. Weird.
